Taylor Swift Describes How She 'Pulled Off' an ‘Ambitious as Hell’ Eras Tour ‘Secret’

Taylor Swift kept a secret from fans for months during the middle of her record-breaking Eras Tour, and now she's opening up about how she and her team "pulled off" the "ambitious as hell" project.

On Black Friday 2024, the "Mastermind" singer released her first book, which she declared to be the "official retrospective" of "the most wondrous tour of [her] life" and which shares a large collection of photos—some never seen before—from the nearly two-year-long world tour.

Alongside the stunning visuals, she included a blurb about each era, some of which revealed brand-new information to hardcore fans, like which visual effect she found to be the "coolest" of the night.

In the brief introduction for The Tortured Poets Department, Swift reminded fans that the era was “added in halfway through the tour,” following the April 2024 release of her latest studio album.

“We conceptualized and rehearsed it secretly, and surprised the Paris crowd with it when we started our European leg of the tour,” she recalled.

It was an Eras Tour first, with “nothing else like it”—"minimalist, white, stark, and bold"—yet seen on her stage, making it all the more of an “exciting challenge to try to improve upon a show I already loved.”

After sharing a few tidbits about the design process—like Vivienne Westwood stepping in to create the new costumes and the fun fact that someone operates her roving platform by laying inside of it—she added, “I wanted to create the illusion of an alien abduction, a battle scene, a religious institution, a mental institution, a haunted house, and a showgirl’s dressing room routine.

She concluded, "It was ambitious as hell but we pulled it off, creating what I think is the most dramatic, cathartic, female-rage driven part of the night.”
