Sunrise's Mark Beretta reveals his run-in with Matildas star Mackenzie Arnold

"It was a killer!"

Sunrise's sports presenter Mark Beretta has revealed he previously had a run-in with Matildas star Mackenzie Arnold back in 2016, ahead of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

"Can I just point out my famous finger," Mark told his co-hosts, holding up his right index finger. "This finger was actually broken by Matildas' goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold!"

"No!" Natalie Barr responded, shocked.

"It was, yeah!" he said. "You might remember, before the Rio Olympics, we did a story for Sunrise at the Institute of Sport and they decided it would be good if I was goalie, and Mackenzie kicked to me."

As footage played of the shootout, Mark added, "That's her breaking my finger! That's how hard she goes!"

"Did you know it at the time?" Matt Shirvington asked, with Mark responding, "I knew it straight away, Shirvo, it was a killer!"

"Lucky it was that finger," Edwina Bartholomew joked, slyly indicating it could have been his middle finger.

"There it is, my favourite finger!" he said, showing his finger to his co-hosts. "Piece of history, right there, broken in two."

"That's the power of the Matildas, breaking fingers," Shirvo added.

Mark added that he has a "great respect" for Mackenzie, who guarded Australia's goal during the 10-round penalty shootout on Saturday night's nail-biting World Cup match against France.

Fans on Instagram loved the story, with one user writing, "Great story," while another added, "Beretts is the best."
