Sunrise's Edwina Bartholomew fires up over COVID-19 jab: 'My choice'

Sunrise newsreader Edwina Bartholomew has fired up at Instagram influencers after they trolled her post on getting the COVID-19 vaccine while pregnant.

Last week, Edwina announced live on air that she is expecting her second child and yesterday, she received the Pfizer vaccine.

On a segment on the morning TV show today, Edwina called for pregnant women to listen to their midwife or obstetrician instead of Instagram influencers.

“I posted on my Instagram about vaccines and pregnancy this morning and a number of Instagram influencers fired right back,” Edwina said.

“For God sake, don’t take your advice from Instagram influencers, don’t take it from me either, speak to your GP, speak to your midwife, your obstetrician, the health experts in your life who know the data, know the detail and take advice from them.”

Kochie said he has a friend who works on a COVID ward and his wife is pregnant and "he was saying it's horrendous if you're pregnant and get COVID, it's terrible."

Taking to her Instagram account later to post the video, Edwina said: "This was my choice for my body, my baby and my family."

"Well done Eddie. Good on you and massive congrats," one person wrote.

"Thank you Eddie - I wish more intelligent people would speak up and say - Don’t take health advice from social media influencers," another person wrote.

Last week, Edwina made the exciting announcement on the show that she is pregnant.

“In developing news, news that will be developing news, news that will be developing for the next six months, we will be having another baby,” Edwina said on the show.

“Due in January, and I tried to tell Molly and she was not terribly interested. I showed her the photo when she scrunched up and threw on the floor.”

Edwina said she and her husband, Neil Varcoe, have decided to keep the sex of the baby a surprise.

"Yes, we know what it is. I will keep that one a secret for now," she said.

It came just days after Edwina threatened to quit Sunrise live on air over a segment on sleep deprivation and new mothers.

It came after a live cross detailing about a new study from scientists at the University of California, LA (UCLA) who warned that too little shut eye in the first six months after labour can actually accelerate ageing in women.

Edwina, who is the mother to 18-month-old daughter Molly, looked disgusted as the camera cut back to the studio.

"Thanks Kristina, really appreciate that cross," the 38-year-old said

"Between covid, climate change and everything else that's happened this week... that is it, I'm out, I quit. That is the worst news ever.”

Edwina laughed as she threw a piece of paper across the table.

In 2019, when Edwina fell pregnant with her daughter, Molly, she told WHO magazine that it didn't happen straight away and took about six months.

“For many years, as a woman, you try so hard to not get pregnant,” she said.

“When you finally get to trying to get pregnant, there’s all these logistics you have to work out, like timing and it’s only really two, three days a month [you can fall pregnant]. It completely sapped the romance out of getting pregnant. But you know, I’m 35 – time’s ticking!”

She said that due to eagle-eyed viewers and her 'carb bloating', she needed to tell everyone bang on the 12-week mark.
