Sunrise's Edwina Bartholomew announces she's pregnant live on air

Sunrise newsreader Edwina Bartholomew has announced that she is expecting her second child.

“In developing news, news that will be developing news, news that will be developing for the next six months, we will be having another baby,” Edwina said on the show.

“Due in January, and I tried to tell Molly and she was not terribly interested. I showed her the photo when she scrunched up and threw on the floor.”

Edwina said she and her husband, Neil Varcoe, have decided to keep the sex of the baby a surprise.

"Yes, we know what it is. I will keep that one a secret for now," she said.

The news comes just days after Edwina threatened to quit Sunrise live on air over a segment on sleep deprivation and new mothers.

It came after a live cross detailing about a new study from scientists at the University of California, LA (UCLA) who warned that too little shut eye in the first six months after labour can actually accelerate ageing in women.

Edwina, who is the mother to 18-month-old daughter Molly, looked disgusted as the camera cut back to the studio.

"Thanks Kristina, really appreciate that cross," the 38-year-old said

"Between covid, climate change and everything else that's happened this week... that is it, I'm out, I quit. That is the worst news ever.”

Edwina laughed as she threw a piece of paper across the table.

In 2019, when Edwina fell pregnant with her daughter, Molly, she told WHO magazine that it didn't happen straight away and took about six months.

“For many years, as a woman, you try so hard to not get pregnant,” she said.

“When you finally get to trying to get pregnant, there’s all these logistics you have to work out, like timing and it’s only really two, three days a month [you can fall pregnant]. It completely sapped the romance out of getting pregnant. But you know, I’m 35 – time’s ticking!”

She said that due to eagle-eyed viewers and her 'carb bloating', she needed to tell everyone bang on the 12-week mark.
