Sublime to release first new song in 28 years, featuring the late Bradley Nowell and his son

The track, “Feel Like That (featuring Bradley Nowell)," also includes additional vocals from Scott Woodruff of reggae band Stick Figure.

Sublime is back in action.

The band, which rose to fame in the early '90s due to their unique fusion of rock, punk, rap, ska, and reggae, is releasing Friday its first original studio track since frontman Bradley Nowell’s death from a heroin overdose 28 years ago, according to Rolling Stone.

Per the report, the track, “Feel Like That (featuring Bradley Nowell)," not only features original vocals from Nowell, but also includes bassist Eric Wilson, and drummer Bud Gaugh, and additional vocals from both Scott Woodruff of reggae band Stick Figure and Nowell’s son, Jakob. The latter picked up his dad's mantle as Sublime lead singer starting with a Coachella performance earlier this year.

Woodruff built the track using old recordings of an improvised jam session between Bradley, Wilson, and Gaugh from early 1996, and as such, fans will note the track is credited to "Sublime x Stick Figure."

Jakob told the outlet how touched he was to create a song alongside his dad. “My dad has a verse and then I have a verse and then Stick closes out the song,” he said, adding, “It’s a beautiful thing.”

“We are blessed that we still have all these old recordings and that we were able to stumble upon an outtake that has been sitting there waiting for all these years,” Wilson added via e-mail to the publication. “They say timing is everything, and I think they were right! It’s super awesome to hear Brad and Jakob singing side by side on the same track. I’m sure this song is gonna set the mood for the summer.”

This new edition of Sublime is playing festivals throughout 2024, and isn't showing signs of slowing down, with Gaugh telling Rolling Stone the group is "ready to explore all options as far as recording goes — remixes, new stuff, who knows." "I think if fans really dig this track and people like the direction, then the sky’s the limit,” added Jakob.

Sublime released studio albums 40oz. to Freedom and Robbin' the Hood in 1992 and 1994, respectively, before experiencing their first major commercial success in 1996 with their self-titled third album, which was released just two months after Nowell's death at age 28. The singles "What I Got," "Wrong Way," and "Santeria" propelled the group to international stardom.
