Steve Martin and Martin Short Share a Love for This 2-Ingredient Meal
And they use a genius shortcut.
We already thought there was nothing more wholesome than Steve Martin and Martin Short’s four decades-long friendship—that was until they began starring alongside one another in the Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building.” Martin and Short’s real-life (and hilarious) friendship, coupled with the unique chemistry they have with the third lead, Selena Gomez, made the show an overnight sensation.
Now, as “Only Murders in the Building” is entering its fourth season, which premieres on Aug. 27, Martin and Short are back to their usual antics promoting the newest episodes.
In June, Short guest hosted “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” where he brought on his long-time friend Martin to talk about Martin’s new documentary, “Steve! (Martin) A Documentary in 2 Pieces,” and their “shared passion” for one particular food.
Steve Martin & Martin Short's Beloved Easy Meal
Martin’s documentary on Apple TV+ is split into two episodes: “Then” and “Now.” The beginning of part two opens with present-day Martin in his kitchen making one of the two things he says he knows how to make.
“I can cook two things: two poached eggs,” Martin jokes in the episode.
Short brought up the documentary opener on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” because, as it turns out, poached eggs are a rather big part of the actors’ relationship.
“Marty and I, he loves poached eggs on toast, too, so we’re often staying in hotels, so if I get a particularly good-looking poached egg, I’ll e-mail Marty the photo,” Martin says in his documentary.
“We do have a shared passion for poached eggs,” Short said on the talk show. “When you’re in your 20s, you send d**k pics; when you’re in your 70s, you send pictures of poached eggs. I have 19 pictures of Steve, we’re on tour, ‘How about these today?’"
The pair have spent many years together on tour, which means dozens of overnight stays and hotel breakfasts.
“We always judge the hotel by their poached eggs,” Martin says.
So, with a deep love for poached eggs on toast with “a lot of pepper,” Martin found an electric egg poacher to make his favorite breakfast at home in a flash, which he then bought for Short, too. Now, his egg poaching technique is down to a science.
“It’s very important you put the right amount of water in because if you put too much in, they come out hard, so I recommend 30 CCs,” he said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Short, on the other hand, couldn’t seem to get the hang of it.
“A week goes by and I call him, I say, ‘How’s the egg poacher doing?’ He says, ‘Oh my God, it’s fantastic, these are the best poached eggs I’ve ever had.’ Then another week goes by, and I say, ‘Still enjoying the egg poacher,” Martin recalled on the talk show. “He says, ‘threw it out.’ I said, ‘Why did you throw it out?’ He said, ‘It stopped working. I’d open it up and it’d just be a mush there, so I threw it out.’ And I said, ‘Well, how much water did you put in?’ He said, ‘Water?’”
Maybe it’s best that Short sticks with the hotel poached eggs over trying to make them at home—which he will be able to do once the duo goes back on tour in September. But, if you want to try Martin and Short’s favorite 10-minute breakfast at home, it looks like Martin uses the $25 Hamilton Beach Egg Bites Maker, which can both poach and sous vide eggs, according to his documentary.
Between Martin and Short’s poached eggs and Gomez’s go-to lunch of chicken salad, you could eat like the cast of “Only Murders in the Building” for nearly an entire day—just don’t forget Marty’s character’s love for dips, of course.
