Steve Buscemi revealed as voice of Starscream during “Transformers One ”Comic-Con panel
"I’m a huge 'Big Lebowski' fan so this was a dream come true," director Josh Cooley said.
Meet the new Starscream in the Transformers universe: Steve Buscemi.
While the actor's villain role in the upcoming Transformers One film has long been kept under wraps, the news was finally revealed during the movie's San Diego Comic-Con panel on Thursday when a spoiler-filled clip was shown to the packed Hall H audience.
The video featured Chris Hemsworth's Orion Pax, Brian Tyree Henry's D-16, Keegan-Michael Key's B-127 a.k.a. Bumblebee, and Scarlett Johansson's Elita-1 being captured and brought to a ruthless group of warriors known as the Cybertron High Guard. Bee recognizes their leader is Starscream, but when Starscream tries to order the foursome to kneel to him, D-16 refuses. The two end up in a fight where D-16 overpowers Starscream and damages his neck, revealing the origin story of his high-pitched voice.

"Do you guys know who that was? Steve Buscemi is the voice of Starscream," director Josh Cooley announced after the video finished playing. "First choice. We call him up and he says yes... I’m a huge Big Lebowski fan so this was a dream come true."
Transformers One, the first-ever fully CG-animated Transformers movie, is an origin story that will reveal that Optimus Prime and Megatron were actually brothers-in-arms who first knew each other as Orion Pax and D-16, respectively, before they became bitter adversaries warring over the fate of their planet, Cybertron. The movie also stars Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion.

"The origin story is incredibly rich," producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said. "If we tried to do this in live action, it would cost us $500 million... You’re really going to get to know the robots in a way that nothing has been able to do before. You know Optimus and Megatron so well but we’re dealing with Orion Pax and D-16. These guys are different but we still plant the seeds that get you to the characters you love."
"It’s characters we know as enemies but seeing how they became enemies was fascinating to me," Cooley added. "I’ve never seen this in any version of Transformers before."
Henry said that the way Orion Pax and D-16 go from friends to enemies is "heartbreaking."
"Losing a friend is one of the worst heartbreaks — its worse than losing a lover," he said. "A friendship is absolute family. I still think about the friends I lost in the third grade... To see that these two iconic characters actually had a friendship and lost it, to see what that was, it is heartbreaking."

Hemsworth was excited to take on his first major animation role, but understood the immense history and gravity of voicing a beloved character such as Optimus Prime.
"What Peter Cullen has done with the character is so incredible, iconic, and the thing that is equally inspiring as also terrifying when trying to play the character," he says. "The goal was never to mimic or sound like Peter Cullen. This is the brash young version of Optimus Prime, before he had become the all-knowing omnipresent figure we have come to know and love."
Transformers One rolls out in theaters Sept. 20.
