Sterling K. Brown Says He Fully Embraced His Nude Scene in “Paradise”: 'I Am Actually an Exhibitionist' (Exclusive)
"My wife is like, 'Will you please put some clothes on?' I said, 'Only if I have to.' It doesn't phase me," Brown tells PEOPLE of stripping down for his new Hulu show
Warning: this story contains spoilers from episodes 1-3 of Hulu's new series, Paradise.
Sterling K. Brown isn't afraid to bare it all for the screen!
The actor stars in Hulu's new political thriller, Paradise, in which he plays Secret Service Agent Xavier Collins, who becomes the leading suspect in the investigation of the shocking murder of President Cal Bradford (James Marsden). In the third episode of the Hulu series, Brown goes fully nude and shows off his backside during one intimate scene.
When asked by PEOPLE if he was nervous to strip down, Brown notes being naked doesn't bother him — but it does ruffle the feathers of his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathé.
"Is it hard? No. Why? Because I am actually an exhibitionist," he admits. "My wife is like, 'Will you please put some clothes on?' I said, 'Only if I have to.' So I really don't care. It doesn't phase me in the least."
"As a matter of fact, my publicist’s more than likely [to say something]," he continues. "Every time something happens, he's like, 'Could you not show people your body? Could you not do that? Because that's what people talk about.'"
But Brown sees it in a different way. "I was like, 'I'm 48 years old. When I turn 50, I'm going to Sally O’Malley,” he says, referring to Molly Shannon’s Saturday Night Live character.
"I'm going to kick, I'm going to stretch, and I'm going to kick again because I'm 50, doggone it," he adds. "And hopefully people will still want to see it. They may not. I don't know. We'll see. But I got two more years. I'll let you know when it happens."
When it comes to his wife's feelings on being naked, Brown notes she's quite the opposite of him — and according to the actor, this presents some challenges.
"She's not an exhibitionist. She goes to bed in a full robe. It's very hard to get the party started," he jokes.
Before any revealing scene, he says he always gives her a heads up.
"I'm her man," he says. "We have open dialogues about it. I was like, 'Yo, this scene is coming up. Da-da-da. Do you want to see it before it comes out?' And she's like, 'Nope, I'm good. I know you have to do it. I don't actually have to watch it.' I said, 'Fair enough. However you make it through is totally fine.'"
And though he believes Bathé — with whom he shares two sons, Amaré, 9, and Andrew, 13 — is "proud" of his impressive physique, the This Is Us actor notes "my wife and I have an interesting dynamic."
"She's competitive, too. She's like, 'Look at this dude out here doing his thing.' If she sees me work out early, she gets mad and she's like, 'Oh, so you worked out already?'" he says. "She's like, 'Oh, good for you.' And then the next thing I know she's like five hours in the gym."
Paradise dropped its debut episode early on Sunday, Jan. 26, with the next two episodes dropping on Jan. 28.
The premiere episode followed Xavier as he discovers the president's body and quietly starts to investigate the murder on his own before it's revealed that Xavier, and the rest of his counterparts, are living in an highly controlled underground bunker.
However, two mysteries remain: who killed President Bradford and how/why are those people there? The next two episodes follow Xavier as he works to get to the bottom of the murder mystery and, in doing so, clear his own name and uncover more truths about the Paradise community he's living in.
Though the show covers a variety of serious topics, Brown says it's been "fun" to step into this character.
"People ask, 'What is it like to do that?' All of it is fun. The funny scenes are fun, the hard scenes are fun. And maybe fun's not the right word all the time, but it's the only word that I have at my disposal because I get to do it," he explains. "I mean, I get to do this thing. People pay me to show up and do this thing, this sort of illumination of the human condition, and it's fun. And that even when it's painful, I have in the back of my mind that somebody will see what this character is going through and they will recognize it and they will recognize themselves inside of it and they will feel seen."
"And I don't know if fun's the right word, but I'm still sticking with it because it gives me great joy to help people feel less alone," he adds.
