‘Squid Game’: See What Awaits Player 456 In New Trailer For Second Season Of Netflix Phenom

Why on earth would Player 456 want to stage a comeback?

That question will be answered in season 2 of Squid Game, which returns December 26 to Netflix. Lee Jung-jae reprises his role as Seong Gi-hun, aka Player 456, who’s now on a mission to expose the deadly truth of the competition.

The teaser also reveals the return of Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man, whose true motivations remain cloaked in secrecy, while Wi Ha-jun’s Hwang Jun-ho is back, driving the narrative forward as the relentless detective on a mission of his own.

Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game became a global phenom following its debut in 2021. After 12 years in development, it took just 12 days for it to become Netflix’s most popular series ever. It dominated the Global Top 10 for nine consecutive weeks — a first for any non-English series — and made history with groundbreaking Emmy wins.

Netflix says the pre-launch campaign for season 2 has already generated 1.5 billion impressions across the streamer’s global social channels, making it Netflix’s biggest to date — ahead of Stranger Things 4, Bridgerton season 3, Wednesday season 1 and One Piece season 1.

Following the drama’s first season success, Netflix dropped Squid Game: The Challenge while kicking off a touring activation called Squid Game: The Experience and a VR adventure called Squid Game: Virtuals. There’s also a podcast, Squid Game-themed consumer products, and a Johnnie Walker limited edition bottle design.

Earlier this week, Deadline reported that a new English-language Squid Game series is in the works with David Fincher coming on to develop it. Although details are vague, rumors have been growing for several months about what Fincher could be up to next.

While he could squeeze in a movie beforehand, insiders say the Squid Game series is likely the project Fincher commits his time to in 2025.
