The multi-camera comedy marks Tim Allen’s network homecoming. The half-hour vehicle casts the Home Improvement and Last Man Standing vet as Matt, “the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop,” while Kat Dennings (2 Broke Girls) plays Riley, Matt’s estranged daughter who returns home with her two kids.
Scott (of American Pie fame) co-stars as Gabriel, a family friend who works at the shop with Matt — and the following photo suggests that sparks may fly between the grease monkey and the single mother.
The gig marks Scott’s first multi-cam, following previous stints on Fox’s single-camera comedy Welcome to Flatch and action series Lethal Weapon. He’s best known to audiences for his breakout role as Steve Stifler in the American Pie film franchise.
Joining Scott, Dennings and Allen are Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (NCIS: New Orleans) as Stitch, a former Marine and fellow mechanic, while Maxwell Simkins (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers) and newcomer Barrett Margolis co-star as Dennings’ TV kids, Carter and Georgia.
As previously reported, Michelle Nader, who served as showrunner on Dennings’ last two shows — CBS’ 2 Broke Girls and Hulu’s Dollface — will serve in that same capacity on Shifting Gears. Season 1 premieres Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, at 8/7c, where it will lead into the midseason return of Abbott Elementary (now airing at 8:30 pm; see ABC’s full winter schedule here).
