Yahoo Lifestyle 12 Years After Their Divorce, Katie Holmes Acknowledged Tom Cruise While Slamming Reports About Their Daughter’s Alleged Trust Fund
Katie Holmes has spoken out against reports about her and Tom Cruise’s 18-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise.
To quickly recap, Tom and Katie got married in 2006, and since they finalized their divorce in 2012, it has been speculated that Tom and Suri are estranged from one another.
The Top Gun star — who also shares two adult children, Connor and Isabella, with his ex-wife, Nicole Kidman — rarely talks about fatherhood. And although he has been photographed in public with Connor and Isabella on some occasions over the past few years, it has been a long time since he was seen with Suri.
For context, it was agreed in Tom and Katie’s divorce that Suri would live primarily with her mom in New York, where the mother-daughter duo have often been photographed together.
It’s no secret that Katie is incredibly private when it comes to her daughter, and from what it appears, Suri has been able to enjoy a relatively low-key upbringing. This year, she celebrated her 18th birthday, graduated from high school, and most recently completed her first semester at Carnegie Mellon University.
However, the various milestones in Suri’s life have prompted unsubstantiated reports about her financial situation, including one recent story from the Daily Mail, which alleged that she became a millionaire after gaining access to a trust fund set up by her father.
“It is part of the divorce deal that a trust fund provided by Tom Cruise be shared with daughter Suri Cruise when she turns 18,” an anonymous source claimed to the outlet, describing the alleged sum as “substantial.”
The source continued: “She was allowed to access it when she turned 18 in April. The rest of the money will become available to her once she enters her 30s. The trust fund was carefully constructed so that she does not get all the money at once and becomes overwhelmed.”
On top of that, the report also alleged that Suri is set to receive a large sum of money from Katie, who the anonymous insider claims is “fiscally minded.”
But now, Katie has taken to Instagram to refute the story, calling for an end to speculation about her daughter’s private life and finances.
On Dec. 8, she posted a screenshot of the Daily Mail headline, which read: “Suri Cruise the millionaire! Tom Cruise's trust fund has ‘kicked in’ and mom Katie Holmes has one for her too.” The Dawson’s Creek actor wrote over the image: “Completely False. Daily mail you can stop making stuff up.”
Katie’s post comes six months after Tom was absent from Suri’s high school graduation in June. At the event, Suri also bolstered years of speculation that she and her father are estranged by reportedly dropping “Cruise” from her name and choosing instead to be referred to as “Suri Noelle,” which is her mom’s middle name.
Back in 2013, Tom publicly challenged the narrative that he had “abandoned” Suri, filing a defamation lawsuit against Bauer Publishing in the wake of his and Katie’s divorce.
In the lawsuit — which was settled in December 2013 — Tom claimed that he and his then-6-year-old daughter spoke regularly and that he had “in no way cut Suri out of [his] life — whether physically, emotionally, financially or otherwise.”
