Sophie Monk reveals her worst first date story: ‘I fell in a bush’

Sophie Monk is at an all-time high in her life, after announcing her engagement in January, revealing plans to release new music later this year and hosting the revamped series of Beauty and the Geek.

The Channel Nine reality show, which premiered on Sunday night, has officially made its return to Australian TV after a seven-year hiatus.

Beauty and the Geek has been labelled as a social experiment, with the aim to pair contestants from different walks of life to learn from each other and sometimes find love.

Host Sophie Monk spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle all about the series’ revival and why it should earn a spot in viewer’s hearts.

“I don't know why it ever went away to be honest because everyone loved it,” the 41-year-old admits.

“It’s developed so much since back in the day where it was a one-trick pony, with the geek looking really geeky and the beauty made to look like a bimbo.

“That’s not what it’s about anymore. The challenges aren't trying to make anyone look silly, it’s not picking on anyone. The challenges are really helping each other grow and bring them out of their shells, both sides.”

The TV personality went on to say that the show was more of an emotional journey than she anticipated, and while fans can expect a lot of laughs this season, they should also prepare for tears.

“It’s just incredible,” she adds. “This is my favourite show by far.”

Despite being an evident beauty, Sophie describes herself as a geek who loves board games, computer games and VR. Her fiancé, 42-year-old Joshua Gross, is also a neurosurgical robotics consultant.

“I don't know if there's anything cool about me, to be honest,” she confesses. “I’ve kind of given up trying to be cool.”

Last night’s premiere saw two couples go on dates to test their connections, including geek Mitchell, who experienced his first date ever with his partner Ashleigh.

Described online as ‘awkward’ yet ‘so sweet’, fans have determined that the unlikely duo ‘must be protected at all costs’.

Speaking about the show’s format to include the unique dates, Sophie shared her own terrible dating stories.

“I fell in a bush once,” she reveals.

“I didn't realise how many wines I’d had and I stood up and I just went. I don't know if I tripped but I just fell straight in a bush. And then I didn’t get a second date, that was it.”

The former Bachelorette continues, detailing that another awful experience occurred when she was struggling to swallow her drink on a date.

“You know when you take a sip of a drink and you’re nervous but it gets caught and you go [coughs] but you can’t let it go?” she begins.

“I just remember blurting out to get it out. So I’ve had heaps of bad experiences, to be honest.”

Beauty and the Geek airs Sunday at 7pm and Monday and Tuesday at 7.30pm on Nine and 9Now.
