Skeleton Crew Recap: Lightsaber Action, Clue to Supervisor’s Identity (?) Tee Up Next Week’s Season Finale

Everybody got what they wanted on this week’s Skeleton Crew. So, why weren’t the kids smiling as the episode faded to black, ahead of next Tuesday’s season finale?

The episode “We’re Gonna Be in So Much Trouble” opened back on At Attin, where Wim’s dad Wendle, Fern’s mom Fara, Neel’s mother Nooma, and KB’s parents Maree and Garree worked together to release a communication buoy up into the night sky. Alas, security droids crashed their launch party, setting in motion a relay race in which the fleeing parents handed off the device to one another, as they each got felled by stun blasts. In the end, it was Fern’s mom Fara who hid behind a boulder long enough to switch on the buoy and send it floating up into the barrier above.

Meanwhile on the Onyx Cinder, the kids were being kids, slapping a slap ball around the main cabin, as the newly sleek, hull-shedded ship hurtled through hyperspace — though Wim, for one, was in a bit of a funk about returning to regular life (and his dreaded assessment test, ugh).

Brutus’ frigate leapt out of hyperspace well ahead of the Onyx Cinder, and all aboard were curious to see that the mythical At Attin is a gas giant surrounded by an impenetrable toxic atmosphere. Jod argued that the barrier is but camouflage, as would surround any “hidden” planet, and suggested Brutus send a “volunteer” on a test flight into the ominous swirls. Things stared out well enough for the volunteer, but a few seconds into the barrier, his transmission began breaking up, after which it became clear that his fighter had been destroyed. Jod suggested that some sort of defense mechanism is also in play, but Brutus wasn’t having it. So, off to the airlock with Jod!

But before Jod could be jettisoned, the Onyx Cinder came out of hyperspace and began making tracks for At Attin. Jod surmised that the Onyx Cinder would be allowed through, so the frigate switched on a tractor beam and reeled the kids in. KB tried to keep Jod & Co. from boarding by grabbing Brutus with a giant mechanical claw and threatening them with a booming robotic voice. Jod saw through ruse, Force’d off his manacles, shot Brutus dead himself, and led his mates onto the Cinder. Soon after, the ship picked up the message being emitted by the parents’ communication buoy. Appearing in pre-recorded hologram, the parents shared their deep worry, and promised open forgiving arms, if the kids can return home.

A desperate Wim launched an impromptu attack plan — as in, charge at the gr’ups yelling “Attack!” — but Jod grabbed him and ordered the four to be thrown into the brig. Jod, though, cannot be captain of two ships at once (per Pirate Code), SM-33 noted, so he claimed the Cinder for his own. Fern quickly claimed “un-claimsies,” and somewhere in the confusion that followed, SM-33 sided with the kids, KO’d Jod and the others, and helped Captain Fern et al fly the Cinder out of the frigate bay and to At Attin, narrowly dodging the electrified defense mechanism and two pirate fighters sicced on them.

Little did the kids know, Jod was still on board. When he revealed himself, SM-33 almost giddily went to dispatch with the stowaway, but Jod whipped out the lightsaber he pinched on Lanupa and decapitated the droid! Jod then threatened the kids into playing along as they arrived on At Attin, with Jod as their “Republic Emissary,” or else he will lightsaber their folks into pieces!

As the ship neared a landing pad within the city, we heard the voice of the unseen Supervisor, alerting all of the arriving Emissary and ordering the regular work day to be halted. Emerging from the Cinder, Jod was greeted as said Emissary, and he and the ship were lowered down into a deep, deep cavern — eventually landing at the foot of a giant vault door. Jod repeatedly asked to make contact with his other ship outside the barrier, but was told by his security droid escort that such an unusual request would have to go through the Supervisor. “Ah, yes, the Supervisor,” Jod nodded. “Better than dealing with a droid.”

But could the Supervisor be a droid himself? The directing of the exchange above, including a cut to the security droid’s reaction, seemed to underscore that Jod’s dismissive use of the word “droid” would prove ironic. Plus, the closing credits revealed that the yet-unseen, powerful figure was voiced this week by Stephen Fry, who does a lot of voice work. But the English actor also does on-camera acting, as well, including in The Morning Show, Bones, Doctor Who, Gosford Park…. We shall see, we shall see.

The security droids opened the vault — one of more than 1,000 like it on the planet, a gob-smacked Jod was informed! — to reveal its cavernous inventory of shiny gold credits. Jod made like Scrooge McDuck, literally bathing in the glistening dataries, while the kids rushed into the arms of their arriving parents.

The reunions’ happiness was cut short, alas, by the whoosh and hum of the lightsaber Jod had fired up, as he intently stared down the four families….
