In sad news for radio fans, in a statement on Wednesday afternoon, radio stars David 'Hughesy' Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan announced the end of their popular morning show that has been going since 2020.

“We’ve loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast, however, due to some of our families living in different cities we are unable to commit to 2025, so with a heavy heart we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward in breakfast,” the hosts said in a joint statement.

“We are so grateful to Sydney for their support, and to double the number of listeners in three years is something we are immensely proud of, and we will miss each and every one of them.”

Though the axing seemed completely out of the blue for loyal listeners, Yahoo Lifestyle understands that the axing has been a “long time coming” and the latest radio ratings in July, where the show dropped 1.4 to a 3.6 market share was the “final nail in the coffin”.

A radio source explained: “SCA (Southern Cross Austereo) have spent millions trying to make this show a success, including having Hughesy relocate from Melbourne to try ‘connect’ with Sydney listeners more by actually living there, but it’s still always struggled to find an audience. They brought in a new executive producer at the start of the year who they poached from KIIS, but even that wasn’t enough and no one is surprised it’s now been scrapped.."

Although 2DayFM are yet to announce who will permanently replace the trio, rumours are circulating within SCA that bosses are planning on networking their FoxFM Melbourne breakfast show Fifi, Fev and Nick into Sydney - to further rival The Kyle & Jackie O Show, which is currently based in Sydney but started broadcasting into Melbourne earlier this year.

The insider added: “Everything is just speculation right now but If Fifi, Fev and Nick do announce they’re expanding into NSW, that’ll lead to a lot of job losses in the network’s Sydney office, which people there are now fearing and preparing for.”

When asked if Hughesy, Ed and Erin were given any advanced notice about today’s axing, the source at SCA said “no”.

Southern Cross Austereo chief content officer Dave Cameron said changes were coming to the breakfast show in 2025.

“As we look to 2025, we are preparing for a change for the 2DayFM Sydney Breakfast show and will make further announcements in due course,” he said.
