Shannon Noll spills on 'tricky' Masked Singer moment: 'Caught off guard'

Since shooting to fame on the inaugural season of Australian Idol in 2003, Shannon Noll has gained a wide fan base Down Under for his larrikin personality and iconic singing voice.

So it’s no wonder that a majority of viewers managed to work out that it was him performing as Blowfly on this year’s season of The Masked Singer Australia.

Superstar panellists Abbie Chatfield and Mel B were also firm with their guess that Shannon was Blowfly after hearing his voice and deciphering the cryptic clues, which included references to his family, his record label and the fact that he lives in Casino.

Chatting with Yahoo Lifestyle following his elimination on Monday night, the Lift hitmaker admits that he was surprised to be guessed by Abbie so early in the competition.

“That was a bit tricky, I was caught off guard,” he says.

“I sort of didn't know what to do after that. I thought I was going to give myself away by not knowing what to do or not doing what I normally do when someone makes a guess, so I just had to remember the movements and body language that I'd done before.

“The producers told me not to worry if I got picked because it didn’t mean I was out, and I think that was just part of it,” he continues, before adding with a laugh, “I’m pretty hard to not guess I think”.

‘Crazy clues’

While the majority of fans were certain that Blowfly’s voice matched that of Shannon Noll, plenty of viewers were confused by the clue packages.

Repeated images of a Lebanese flag and pizza led some people to believe it might have been an actor from Fat Pizza, while others - including Chrissie Swan - believed the clues added up to Grant Denyer.

“They were some crazy clues and I didn’t even know half of them myself which was funny,” Shannon remarks.

“I think one was ‘The holder of great wisdom’, and I wouldn't have had a clue what that one was from. But apparently, Shannon in some language means ‘possesses great wisdom’ or something. So when the producer told me that I went, ‘Well I’m not going to try and guess the rest if that’s how hard they are’.

Shannon went on to say that even he was confused by the inclusion of the Lebanese flag, and he still hasn’t worked it out.

“I had a band called Cyprus, but I don’t really understand where that one was either,” he admits.

“There were a few there where I was sort of going like, ‘The judges are better than me if they can work that out!’. They go to great lengths for the clues.”

‘A real challenge’

Despite appearing on a number of reality TV shows now, including Dancing With The Stars and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, Shannon says that The Masked Singer was “one of the craziest things” he’s ever done in his career.

“Everyone was so great to work with, and it was really just a lot of fun to get through it,” he adds.

“It was a real challenge learning different songs and songs I'd never normally sing, like Adele, but it all added to the challenge and I really enjoyed it.”

Now, Shannon is currently working on his seventh studio album and has just released his latest single Take Me Away.

“I’m just moving forward and working on new music at the moment,” he says about his next steps. “I’ve got the Deni Ute Muster coming up and then Oktoberfest, so now it’s all about the shows right now.”
