Shannen Doherty's relationship with her mom and dad was special.

The late Beverly Hills, 90210 star, who died at age 53 on July 13 after years of living with cancer, is the daughter of Rosa and John Doherty, whom she often talked fondly about through the years.

"I think I was always a fighter,” Doherty previously recalled of her childhood, crediting her parents for her tenacity. “I was raised that way to be very strong and that I could do anything that I put my mind to."

Doherty's father, John, died in November 2010 after suffering a stroke on Christmas Day nearly a year prior. In March 2023, the Charmed alum posted a heartfelt Instagram tribute to her late dad on his birthday.

"I miss him everyday," she wrote in part alongside a slideshow of images. "This year has been one for the books and I desperately wish he was here to help guide me. He always gave me the strength I needed to do what needed to be done."

She continued, "He stood by my side with love and kindness and that allowed me to go thru hurt and pain with a little less cause he was there. He was the example of what every man should strive to be. A rock. A source of deep love. A guide. Honest. Loyal to his core. Yeah, I miss him. Deeply."

Doherty's bond with her mother, Rosa, was just as special. While she admired her mother for her strength and support, she also made her mom's health a "priority."

"My priority at the moment is my mom," Doherty admitted on her Let's Be Clear podcast in April 2024. "Because it’s going to be so hard on her, I want other things to be a lot easier," she expressed at the time.

John and his wife, Rosa, are the parents of two children, Doherty and her older brother Sean. At the time of Doherty's birth, John worked in a Memphis bank while Rosa owned a beauty parlor. When the 90210 star was seven, the family moved to Los Angeles, where John founded a transportation business.

When John died in 2010, Doherty released a statement that described her bond with her father, calling him the "greatest man in the world." She added, "I love him with every inch of my being and cannot imagine life without him."

Shannen called Rosa 'determined' and 'the best mom'

Rosa was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm when Doherty was 8 years old. When speaking with PEOPLE in November 2023, the actress opened up about her mother's strength and credited her for instilling that trait in herself at a young age.

"I come from a woman who was determined,” Doherty said at the time. “She impressed that upon me as a very young child like, 'You don't give up. You just have to work hard at it.'"

Doherty revealed that her mom was always top of mind when making choices, in addition to other members of her family.

"I don't think that there's a decision that I make that I don't take [my mom] into consideration. I love her, and I am so incredibly grateful to her for being an amazing mother," the actress told PEOPLE. "I take my brother into consideration and his children, my dog, my animals."

John influenced Shannen's love life

During her Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty podcast, the actress shared how her close bond with her dad influenced her relationships later in life.

In an episode released on Father's Day 2024, the Charmed alum spoke about the "feelings of abandonment" she felt "watching him going in and out of the hospital" and the "fear" of wondering whether it would be the last time she'd ever see him again.

"But it wasn't like he was doing that to me," Doherty explained. "It was more that I was projecting that onto myself because I was so scared that the most important man in my life was not going to be there, that there was parts of me that sort of shut down as I got older."

The actress — who had been married three times — added, "And I think I definitely, we've discussed this before, you guys, where I chose men that were not like my dad, that were not that kind and that gracious and that great."

Doherty often shared sweet moments with Rosa on social media, posting photos with her mom on Instagram and clips together on her podcast.

"Happy birthday to the best mom in the world. I love you to the moon and back times infinity," Doherty wrote on Instagram in celebration of Rosa's 76th birthday in December 2023.

"Happy Mother’s Day to this amazing, strong, loving mom. I love you so much @themamarosa see you soon mom!" she wrote alongside a loving image with her mom in 2023.

John inspired Shannen to go on Dancing With the Stars

Doherty competed on ABC's Dancing With the Stars season 10 in 2010. Her decision to go on the show was influenced by her dad, who requested she participate after he suffered a stroke on Christmas Day in 2009.

Though she was eliminated early in the competition, Doherty said, "I did what I set out to do." She explained, "I made my dad proud, that’s all that really matters."

Upon her departure, the actress — who was partnered with Mark Ballas — said she gained valuable lessons from the experience. "What I took away from the show is that perseverance and hard work do pay off," she said at the time. "It pays off in seeing my father’s face and the joy that I brought him, and I got so close to my partner."

In an April 2024 podcast episode, Doherty revealed she wanted to get a tattoo of her dad's name to keep his memory alive. However, she said she couldn't follow through with it due to her Stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis paired with the risk of getting an infection from the needle.
