After learning that her beau Isaiah had his father’s company fund her research project, Whitney was furious. She confronted Isaiah and told him that she didn’t want to feel like she owed him anything. It wasn’t until Whitney confided in her ex Canaan about why she and her current guy were in a fight that Whitney started to come around to Isaiah’s side. As a scholarship student, Canaan related to Whitney’s feelings, but he explained that what rich donors do with their money is on them. Whitney texted Isaiah that she owed him an apology and would hit him up later. But it wasn’t Isaiah’s door that she showed up at the next day. Instead, she came to Canaan’s room and kissed him.
Alyah Chanelle Scott, who plays Whitney, credits “genuine chemistry” for drawing her character back to her ex.
“I find myself being older than the character, judging her a little bit and being like ‘Oh, my God, she’s so dumb,’ but also, I was her at a certain point in my [life],” Scott tells TVLine. “I remember being her at a certain point and being like, ‘But he likes me. We have such good chemistry…’ or ‘I miss that attention or that feeling.'”
The fact that Canaan sincerely apologized to Whitney for pursuing her friend/roommate Kimberly has also helped the exes rebuild their friendship this season. (“An apology goes a very long way,” Scott notes.)
“The way that they’re able to come back together with a lot of self-awareness of the situation, I really appreciated it not just being swept under the rug,” Scott shares, “but also being a little bit like, ‘That was crazy.’ ‘Yeah, that was crazy. We still kind of have feelings for each other. How do we deal?'”
“I find it very fun and, also, sadly relatable, it’s embarrassing to say,” Scott adds with a laugh. “For a younger version of myself, [it’s] relatable.”
So does the unexpected kiss mean that Whitney and Isaiah’s nascent relationship is over, and that Whitney is looking to get back together with Canaan?
“I don’t know. Whitney is on her own journey, and she’s going to do what she’s going to do, for better or for worse,” Scott says. “I find that you revert sometimes when you feel a lack of control and a lack of stability. You’re, like, craving it from somewhere. So I think Canaan is that. I don’t know how long that lasts. I don’t know if that’s real. I don’t know if it becomes healthier than that. But I think, initially, that’s like the draw and the cling. But I also know that she’s growing and, in her own way, is healing, and so, there’s hope that she eventually lands in a place that is remotely healthy. I hope that for her. Regardless of if it’s Canaan or Isaiah or no one, I want her to be healthy and happy.”
Mental health has been a big storyline for Whitney in Season 3, with her struggling to juggle competition on the soccer team, her Bio-Chem studies, and her relationships and friendships.
“All of that starts to weigh on her, and she can’t quite figure out why she’s struggling to sleep or why she can’t eat,” Scott describes. But after Isaiah suggested that she’s experiencing anxiety, “she’s like, ‘Oh, that’s what that means? I’ve heard that word before, but I didn’t associate that with something that I could experience,’ which I feel like is a common experience, and there’s a lot of shame there.”
Whitney paid a brief visit to the campus mental health services office in Episode 5, but she left abruptly before talking to anyone and brushed off their follow-up call.
“Watching how she starts to slowly accept that that’s her reality and then get help, I’m really proud that I was able to represent that and do that,” Scott says, “because I think so often, we go to college and we expect that we’re going to be juggling a million things and be able to do it flawlessly, and some people are and some people aren’t, and there’s no stigma either way. But seeing her deal and seeing her try to get help was very cathartic for me.”
