Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Reaction When Asked About Jennifer Love Hewitt Is Raising Eyebrows
Sarah Michelle Gellar returns to television this week in the prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin,” but it’s her blunt response to an inquiry about a former co-star that’s generating discourse online.
Gellar, while attending the New York premiere Wednesday of “Dexter: Original Sin,” was asked by an “Extra” reporter about the forthcoming revival of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
Though Gellar starred as teen pageant queen Helen Shivers in the 1997 horror smash, her character met a grisly fate and is thus unlikely to appear in the revival. Still, the actor has teased an “unofficial,” behind-the-scenes role in the film, which is being directed by her friend Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
Gellar seemed excited to chat about “I Know What You Did Last Summer” at Wednesday’s premiere, noting that the new movie boasts an “incredible cast” and a script that’s “so much fun.” But the conversation took an awkward turn when the actor was asked about the potential involvement of Jennifer Love Hewitt, one of the surviving characters from the 1997 film.
“I have nothing to do with that,” Gellar replied, before attempting to walk away.

Not surprisingly, the interview garnered a plethora of cheeky reactions from fans, some of whom speculated that the two actors may have feuded while working on the film more than 27 years ago.
“I often wonder what happened between SMG and JLH. It’s clear they had a falling out,” one person wrote in response to the interview on YouTube. “SMG is almost disgusted at her mention here lol.”
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, another person wrote: “This is the kind of content I live for. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s face is a whole mood — like, ‘We’re not friends, but I’m not saying why!’”
Among those who begged to differ, however, was “Extra” correspondent Tommy DiDario. Though DiDario didn’t interview Gellar for “Extra,” he featured Hewitt on a recent episode of his “I’ve Never Said This Before” podcast, during which she spoke favorably about Gellar.
“I’m not sure it feels like a feud to me. Perhaps we shouldn’t continue to pin women against one another for no reason,” DiDario wrote on X. “Just my two cents.”
Despite Gellar’s apparent reticence to discuss her former co-star, Hewitt on Friday confirmed her involvement in the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film, which is slated for a 2025 release.
“It’s never too late to go back. Julie James is returning,” Hewitt wrote on Instagram, referring to her character. “I know what you will be doing next summer!”
