Royal chef reveals Queen's favourite snack since age 5
The Queen’s favourite snack has been revealed, and she’s been eating it since she was just 5 years old.
Darren McGrady worked as a royal chef for 15 years, and he has now shared some secrets on social media.
Sharing an insight into Her Majesty's life, he told fans how they can make her favourite snack at home.
“The Queen was served jam pennies in the nursery as a little girl, she’s had them for afternoon tea ever since,” he said on YouTube.
“Simple, just bread and jam with a little butter — usually strawberry jam. We’d make the jam at Balmoral Castle with the gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens.”

Darren has racked up over 226,000 followers on YouTube, and his channel’s description says he’s ‘dishing on food favourites’ from his time in the royal kitchens.
The former royal chef has cooked for the Queen, Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry.
Darren recently recounted the time he made the Queen ‘really angry’ when he was working for the royals.
Explaining that the Queen communicate with the chefs via a red, leather-bound menu book called ‘The Menu Royal’, he said that she needs to approve any new dishes.
“Whenever you put a new recipe on for The Queen, she likes to see the recipe,” he told fans. "For the most part, the Queen eats the same menu, the same dishes all the time.”
When suggesting a new dish, Darren forgot to include the recipe and received a handwritten note from her, reminding him of his big mistake.
Darren also spilled that the Queen is extremely fond of scones for afternoon tea — and they have to be made perfectly.
"When I started as a young chef at Buckingham Palace, it was fascinating to see how important afternoon tea was to the Queen," he said, before adding that she loves both plain scones and ones with raisins.
The royal is also known for her love of the simple tuna and mayonnaise sandwich, according to The Telegraph.
Former royal chef Owen Hodgson let the publication know the royal is very particular when it comes to this sandwich, since it’s her favourite.
Not only does her sandwich need to be buttered well, with thinly sliced cucumber, but the royal also requires a sprinkle of pepper to finish.
