When clues put vending machine operator named Liam Glasser (Fringe‘s Seth Gabel) on their radar, Detective Nyla Harper (played by Mekia Cox) at first casually approached the stranger, ostensibly for help on a case. But once Nyla confirmed — in her mind, at least — that Liam is the one who attacked her in the abandoned building and jabbed her with a paralytic, she put her prime suspect on notice.
But Nyla is going to have to really make her case against Glasser, seeing as Mid-Wilshire Division already has a mentally iffy guy confessing to the wave of serial killing.
“I know you’re used to being the smartest guy in the room, and you’ve played this thing perfectly so far…,” Nyla told Liam, in private, outside his van. “But you can’t help who you are. You’ll be discreet for a while, but you won’t be able to stop yourself and you will take another victim, and we will be there.
“You’ve gotten away with everything because you moved in the shadows,” Nyla continued, “but now you’re in the spotlight — and you will stay there until I find a way to hang these murders around your neck and lock you away forever.”
If Harper seems dead-set on taking down Glasser, it’s because she very much is, as portrayer Mekia Cox shares in the TVLine Q&A below.
TVLINE | Might Nyla regret “poking the bear” as much as she did, putting Glasser on notice there outside his van?
I don’t think so. Nyla is very calculated, she knows what she’s doing. She’s doing these things on purpose, because she really doesn’t want him out there murdering again. She doesn’t want any more victims, so she does that to scare him and let him know, “Yes, you are being watched.”
TVLINE | How would you describe the Harper/Glasser dynamic moving forward? Is he basically her Joker?
Yes. [Laughs] Yes, very much so. He is constantly on her mind. She is focused on getting him, and she’s not going to feel comfortable until she does.
TVLINE | Showrunner Alexi Hawley specifically warned of “conflict” ahead for Nyla and James. Is she forthcoming with her husband about this new case she is working on, and how dangerous it is?
I mean… not really, no. [Chuckles] She’s never open with James about how dangerous things are, because he’d then worry about her, and she doesn’t want that. She does her best to keep a lot away from him, because she doesn’t want him scared.
TVLINE | As Nyla tries to get the goods on Glasser, which clearly will be a process, will he manage to claim another victim, or more?
For a little while, he’s on pause…. That much I can say.
