Based on Michelle Frances’ 2017 novel of the same name, The Girlfriend stars Wright as Laura, a woman with a glittering career, loving husband and precious only son, Daniel. But when Daniel brings home his girlfriend, Cherry (played by Cooke), Laura’s seemingly perfect life is blown apart.

“After an uncomfortable first meeting, Laura grows convinced that Cherry isn’t who she says she is,” the official logline reads. “While no one else can see what she sees, Laura refuses to stand by and watch Daniel be deceived. She’ll do anything to protect him. As things go from bad to deadly, the question is, is Cherry a manipulative social climber? Or is Laura paranoid and possessive?”

The cast also includes Waleed Zuaiter (Altered Carbon) as Laura’s husband, Howard, and Laurie Davidson (TNT’s Will) as her son, Daniel. Wright is also set to direct the series.

AUG. 22 UPDATE: The Girlfriend has added six more series regulars to its ensemble, including Tanya Moodie (A Discovery of Witches) as Isabella, Laura’s best friend; Shalom Brune-Franklin (Baby Reindeer) as Brigitte, Isabella’s daughter; and Karen Henthorn (Coronation Street) as Tracey, Cherry’s mother.

Also joining the cast are Anna Chancellor (Pennyworth) as Lilith, a “trailblazing, straight-talking artist who has rejected the phony, superficial allure of the art world to forge her own path,” per the character description; Leo Suter (Vikings: Valhalla) as Nicholas, Cherry’s ex-boyfriend; and Francesca Corney (The Buccaneers) as Millie, Nicholas’ current fiancée.

“I’m thrilled to be directing and acting in this wildly delicious psychological thriller filled with plot twists and surprising character turns, and to be working with such talented actors, Olivia and Laurie, and an overall amazing cast and crew,” Wright said in a statement.

Added book author Frances: “To have Robin Wright both star and direct is beyond my wildest dreams. She is the perfect ‘Laura’ and I can’t wait to see her bring The Girlfriend to the screen.”

The Girlfriend will mark Wright’s first TV role since ending her six-season run on Netflix’s beleaguered House of Cards. Cooke, meanwhile, currently co-stars as Alicent Hightower on HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, which concluded its second season (out of a planned four) in August.
