Gemstones’ swan song will span nine episodes, all of which will also stream on Max.
“The Lord spoke to me and said it’s time to wrap this sucker up,” series creator and star Danny McBride joked in a statement when Gemstones’ final season was confirmed. “The story this season made the themes, ideas and characters in The Righteous Gemstones feel whole and complete. I have loved every second of working with this team for the past eight years, and there are some incredible payoffs, twists and turns in store over the course of this wild final season.”
The Righteous Gemstones, which first premiered on HBO in August 2019, centers on the Gemstone family, a successful-but-dysfunctional group of televangelists and megachurch pastors led by patriarch Eli (John Goodman) and his three maladjusted kids, Jesse (McBride), Kelvin (Adam DeVine) and Judy (Edi Patterson). According to the Season 4 logline, “Gemstone family ties run deep” despite their constant bickering, “and this season, the family’s codependence is tested as they attempt to move forward without letting go of their storied past.”
The main cast also includes Tim Baltz as BJ, Tony Cavalero as Keefe, Cassidy Freeman as Amber, Skyler Gisondo as Gideon and Walton Goggins as Baby Billy Freeman. As previously reported, Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and Seann William Scott (Shifting Gears) have also joined the new episodes as mother-son duo Lori and Corey Milsap; Arden Myrin (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will also appear as Jana Milsap, Corey’s wife.
