As we're getting closer to the season 20 premiere of America's Got Talent on May 27, we can't help but think about last season's winner, singer Richard Goodall. What has he been up to since he clinched the title back in the summer of 2024? Turns out, we have a surprise update on how he's faring since his big win — and it's actually super surprising.
Richard appeared on the Tell Us About Yourself podcast back in January, and he spoke out about his days of being a school janitor in his hometown of Terre Haute, Indiana. While his vocal abilities were already a staple among students, AGT viewers got to witness his impressive singing skills during his time on the NBC series. But while he captured the nation's hearts on TV, Richard shared that he still works as a janitor while taking time off to perform music gigs.
"Never at any point did I ever have any aspirations to perform," he told host Chris Carrion at the time, per TV Insider. "I mean, I've always wanted to perform, but it's never been a drive of me to be famous or be noticed. It's more of a 'music and people' thing than a 'hey, here I am, notice me type thing.'"
This is definitely something we wouldn't have expected from a winner of the competition show! But as he added about staying at his job, it's something he couldn't see himself not doing at the end of the day.
While Richard did point out he may have to figure something out if he gets more work as a singer in the future (which we can absolutely see happening!), he does credit AGT for changing his life in the best way.
"If it's something that you love and you're passionate about, you have to make time," he added about what his AGT experience means to him. "Each song that I sing is a time capsule into people's lives. It takes you back to a certain point in time... That's what all of this is about."
As fans may remember, Richard stunned audiences by performing a moving rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'." He eventually went straight to the live shows (thanks to receiving a Golden Buzzer) and eventually defeated dog act Roni Sagi and Rhythm and electric drone group Sky Elements to become the AGT season 19 winner.
Well, we'll just have to keep our eyes peeled and see what Richard does next!
