Reese Witherspoon Was Made Foreman on a Jury Because of ‘Legally Blonde’
Here’s the thing about actors: no matter how good they are in a role, at the end of the day, they’re just pretending.
Unfortunately for Reese Witherspoon, some of her peers didn’t get that memo.
In a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the Big Little Lies star detailed how one of her past roles gave her a big responsibility that she didn’t expect.
She started off by explaining to the television host that she “did not want to do jury duty” when a California court called her to serve. “They picked me for a long trial, y’all, it was probably like, two weeks I was on the jury,” she said.
Witherspoon shared that she was “very invested in” the trial, a “dog bite case,” but when the jury went to deliberation and was tasked with selecting a foreman, “they all unanimously” chose her.
Witherspoon described her confusion at the moment, explaining that she asked her fellow jurors for clarity. “ I was like ‘why did you pick me?!’ and they were like ‘you went to law school!’” Witherspoon played a law student in the 2001 hit movie Legally Blonde.
Though the Wild star tried to explain that she “definitely didn’t go to law school, I didn’t finish college” the jurors still “fully made me the foreman.”
The incident, which the Walk the Line star said happened “probably seven years after Legally Blonde,” made her realize that “people don’t know much about the law.”
She then spoke to the group at large, advising, “if you get picked for jury duty, please do it because honestly, some bad stuff goes down in there, y’all.”
At that point, fellow guest Will Ferrell asked if the dog was “innocent or guilty,” prompting Witherspoon to explain further. “Listen, this lady had a dog and the dog bit somebody in the neighborhood,” she said.
“But here’s the deal, this other lady put her hand in a dog fight,” Witherspoon continued. “You can’t do that,” Ferrell noted. “Rule number one, what did your mother tell you? Don’t put your hand in a dog fight,” Witherspoon explained.
“I’ve always told my children ‘put your hands in dog fights,’” quipped Ferrell. “I feel terrible. I’ve always said first rule: see a dog fight? Get your hand in there, wave it around!”
Witherspoon and Ferrell star in the upcoming movie You’re Cordially Invited, which hits theaters on Jan. 30. In it, they play a father of the bride (Ferrell) and sister of another bride (Witherspoon) whose weddings get double booked, causing chaos.
