Owen Hendricks has got to be the luckiest lawyer in CIA history. Ever since meeting Russian asset Max Meladze (Laura Haddock) in season 1 of Netflix's The Recruit, he's been in life-or-death situation after life-or-death situation, and in season 2, he was in more danger than ever. Desperate to find out if Owen made it out of The Recruit season 2 finale unscathed? Look no further. Here's everything you need to know about The Recruit season 2 ending and what it could mean for a season 3.

Owen and Dawn's Temporary Alliance

Now reluctant allies, Owen (Noah Centineo), Jang Kyun (Teo Yoo), Lester (Colton Dunn), his wannabe murderer/colleague Dawn (Angel Parker), her sketchy friend Dodge (Jesse Collin), and Yoo Jin Lee (Shin Do-hyun) make their way to Russia in the hopes of rescuing Nan Hee from the Yakuza. Owen is counting on Nichka (Maddie Hasson) to be his backup on the ground, but she's been a reluctant asset from the very beginning, and, somewhat predictably, the mission is doomed from the start.

At first, Nichka provides reliable intel, telling Owen and Jang Kyun that Nan is alive and arranging a meet for them to buy her release. The only issue? Owen has run out of money, and they don't actually have the millions demanded by the Yakuza for Nan's safe return. Desperate, the two resolve to try to make the deal anyways. (But not before Owen spends the night with his childhood love, Yoo Jin, naturally.)

Posing as hostage negotiators, Owen and Jang Kyun meet with the Yakuza, who bring Nichka and Nan. The plan is to have Dawn and her team of renegades attack the meet before the gang has a chance to count their cash and get the trio safely back onto Yoo Jin Lee's ship. Of course, this is The Recruit, so anything that can go wrong, does. A Russian patrol boat arrives just as Dawn and her team are set to swoop in. Unable to carry out a covert mission in front of Russian nationals, Dawn stays put, and Owen, Jang Kyun, and Nan are on their own. They manage an initial escape, but Jang Kyun, who has been shot, and Nan are quickly apprehended, while Owen ends up playing right into Nichka's hands.

Nichka and the CIA Turn on Owen

Determined to rescue Jang and Nan, Owen decides to remain in Russia against Lester's orders, leading Lester to call Nichka to retrieve him. What Lester doesn't know is that Nichka had been planning on double crossing them all along. She promised her Russian mob bosses a CIA agent (Owen), and she plans to deliver. She tries to take Owen hostage, but he manages to knock her out and stuff her in the trunk of her car. Pretty impressive considering he's "just a lawyer" and she's an expertly trained killer and all.

The CIA orders Dawn to kill Jang Kyun before the Russians can break him in interrogation, but she's got her own plans. It all comes to a head at the local airfield, where the Russians are holding Jang and Nan. Unsurprisingly, Owen's dumb luck continues, and he manages to get to Jang Kyun and Nan in time to save them. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to him, Dawn has arrived with a snipper riffle and is aiming to shoot him in the head when Nichka arrives, desperate for revenge on Owen. Nichka kills Dawn and their fight gives Owen, Jang Kyun, and Nan enough time to escape into the sea.

Of course, swimming in open water isn't exactly a great exit plan. Good thing Yoo Jin Lee managed to get the jump on Lester, tie him up, and take control of her boat to come rescue them. The trio are able to board the ship and they narrowly escape certain death by Russian coast guard when an American submarine emerges from the sea.

What does the season 2 finale mean for season 3?

Jang Kyun will make a deal with the U.S. government and work for the CIA, so it's possible he could return for another season. Meanwhile, Owen's future is more uncertain. This entire time, the CIA had been assuming that Owen would fail in his mission and was planning on pinning any fallout on him. But now that he's on his way home and Dawn isn't, I'm guessing she'll be the one blamed for all of Owen's chaos and he'll return to work.

But will Owen want to go back to the CIA? At times this season, he seemed ready to leave the agency and focus on becoming a better man—one who doesn't use people to get ahead. And while he ended the season on a contemplative note, there's no doubt it won't be long before he makes a boneheaded mistake that sends him on yet another international super spy mission.
