Raven-Symoné Jokes Co-Hosting “The View” Taught Her to 'Shut the Hell Up': 'If You Have an Opinion, Keep It To Yourself'

"You really do have to mold how you say things," the 'Scrabble' host explained

Raven-Symoné has a good sense of humor about her time on The View.

The actress and television personality appeared on the Thursday, Oct. 3 episode of Sherri to promote Scrabble, the game show she's hosting on The CW. And while catching up with host Sherri Shepherd, the two reminisced about their previous employment on the long-running ABC daytime series.

View watchers will remember that Raven-Symoné co-hosted the series from 2015-2016, while Shepherd was on the show from 2007–2014.

Asked what The View taught her, Raven-Symoné — who co-hosts The Best Podcast Ever With Raven and Miranda podcast — quickly joked, "to shut the hell up."

"To like, not speak. If you have an opinion, keep it to yourself," the That's So Raven star said, before adding, "No, I’m just playing."

But there was some truth to the Disney Channel alum's statement.

Across her three seasons on The View, she found herself in the hot seat more than once for things that she said, including a headline-making remark that she wouldn’t hire someone with a "ghetto name." She also once argued against the idea of putting Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, noting instead that would have chosen Rosa Parks, who was "closer to the progression that we're doing now."

Reflecting back on the gaffs she made, Raven-Symoné admitted her approach to the show was all wrong. "When I started the show, I said, ‘I’m going to make this like I’m talking to my best friends in my house.’ When I left the show, I said, ‘That is a television show, live, with million people watching, that was not neighborhood conversation,' " she remembered.

"You really do have to mold how you say things," she added. "It’s live! It’s really difficult. And it’s really difficult to say anything on television, live or not, because people truly get clips and then choose what it means later for themselves,"

Earlier in the week, Raven-Symoné returned to The View where she told Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin that she still gets nervous about being at the table.

"As you guys know, every time I come here, I have to come to this job maybe 45 minutes earlier to say hi to everybody. And then when I get on this, I have PTSD — please don’t ask me any questions," she said.

"But I do love these cups!" she laughed, taking a sip of water. "Good cups this season!"

The remarked prompted Behar to point out how the show has changed since then, moving to a more centralized focus on politics. But her former co-host disagreed.

"I got a lot of scolding back in the day, that [I wasn't] paying attention to [politics] as much," Raven-Symoné replied.

She's paying attention now, though. "I watch it now for actual entertainment," Raven-Symoné said. "It is absolutely amazing and there are so many different ways you can go about it, but the one thing I wanted to say about it is if you're confused about who to vote for because certain policies sit certain ways, because like, yeah, there are some things I like about the Republican side and there are some things I like about the Democrat side, but ultimately I'm choosing the person that best represents me as a human to the rest of the world and what that looks like."
