Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang Unveil the 2025 Oscar Nominations, ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘Wicked’ Among Top Contenders

The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards are here. Actress and writer Rachel Sennott joined “Saturday Night Live” and “Wicked” star Bowen Yang in Beverly Hills on Thursday to announce the official nominees for the forthcoming Oscars, which will air on ABC on March 2 at 7 p.m. ET in Los Angeles. Yang opted for a suited look courtesy of Moschino while Sennott went with her iteration of the little black dress for the occasion.

Emilia Pérez” leads the Oscar nods with 13 nominations, followed by “Wicked” and “The Brutalist” with 10 each. “Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón made history in the Best Actress category, becoming the first openly trans performer to earn a nomination.

The Best Actress category also features a string of impressive narratives between each of its nominees. At the age of 25, Mikey Madison earned her first Oscar nomination for her work in “Anora,” while Cynthia Erivo clinched a nomination for her turn in “Wicked.”

Demi Moore, who won a Golden Globe for her performance in “The Substance,” earned her first Oscar nomination, while Fernanda Torres received a nod for her work in “I’m Still Here.”

Torres’ mother, actress Fernanda Montenegro, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 1999 for her performance in “Central Station.”

Among the nominees for Best Costume Design, “Wicked” costume designer Paul Tazewell, with whom WWD spoke to in November 2024, picked up a nomination for the film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. Other nods in the category were handed to “Conclave,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Gladiator II” and “Nosferatu.”

Both “Wicked” and “Nosferatu” also landed nominations in Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Other films nominated in the category include “A Different Man,” “The Substance” and “Emilia Pérez.”
