Professional cleaner's $1.80 item to solve three kitchen issues: 'Favourite tip'
Sophie Webb shares how the humble lemon can be used for so much more than just a cocktail garnish.
We're all looking to save some money these days - whether it's on clothing, groceries, holidays or even annoying household tasks like cleaning. Not only that but as we learn more about the benefits of toxin-free living, we might be more inclined to reach for more natural products.
So, if we can simply reach for something already in our house and that we know is safe and natural to use, it's a pretty big bonus, right? This is exactly what Sophie Webb, who shares her home cleaning and organisation hacks with her followers, does and one of the hero "products" she uses is none other than the humble lemon.
Yep, those delicious, tangy, bright yellow bulbs that you can buy for about $1.80 at Coles could just be your best mate the next time you've got cleaning tasks to tackle.
"Lemons are so versatile for household tasks," Sophie tells Yahoo Lifestyle. "You can squeeze lemon juice down your kitchen drain to freshen it up, or use half a lemon sprinkled with bicarbonate of soda to scrub and shine your sink. They’re natural, effective, and leave everything smelling amazing."
How to get limescale out of your kettle
One of Sophie's most popular hacks using lemons is the ever-so-simple way she removes the gross limescale from the bottom of a kettle (when was the last time you looked in there?!).

Sophie takes an old piece of lemon, cuts it up and then pops it into the kettle to boil and then tips out the water to reveal a spotless jug interior.
Remarks like, "one of my favourite hacks ✨", "Great idea!" and "That is a really nice use for getting more use out of the lemon!" populate the comment section of the video on both Instagram and TikTok.
"My Gran taught me the lemon-cleaning hack for kettles, and it’s been my favourite ever since," she says. "It’s so simple and leaves the inside of the kettle looking shiny and spotless every time."
Elaborating on why the easy hack works Sophie explains, "The citric acid in lemons naturally breaks down limescale and leaves a fresh, clean fragrance. Just be sure to empty and rinse the kettle thoroughly before making your next cup of tea. The best part? It’s effective after just one boil."
Lemon hack for cleaning wooden boards
Another of Sophie's popular lemon tips is using the citrus fruit to revive old chopping boards.
"Rub with coarse salt and a lemon half for a deep clean. Wipe it down, then finish with a layer of coconut oil to restore and protect. 🍋," she captions her video which has been viewed 450k times on Instagram.
The result is a board that looks as good as new with the post attracting comments from plenty of people resolving to try it themselves.
"When it comes to chopping boards, lemons work wonders on all types, but they’re especially great for wooden ones as the juice can get into any cracks or crevices," Sophie explains to Yahoo Lifestyle.
"The lemon juice cuts through grime, while the salt acts as a gentle abrasive to lift stains. I recommend giving your chopping boards a deep clean every month, or more often if they’re heavily used."
One more lemon hack for the road...
To cap off just how handy these yellow balls of flavour really are, Sophie has one more tip for how they can be used when cleaning.

"If I could add one more favourite hack, it’s using a lemon to clean your microwave," she says. "Just place a bowl of water with lemon slices inside, microwave it for a couple of minutes, and then wipe down the interior, it makes stubborn grease and grime so easy to remove."
And here we were, thinking that lemons were only good as a garnish for a refreshing G&T!
