The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took to Twitter hours after his death, writing: "We are shocked and saddened by the murder of Sir David Amess, who dedicated 40 years of his life to serving his community.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues."

They also signed off with their initials, to indicate the message came direct from them rather than their online team.

Sir David was one of the longest-serving MPs in parliament, and had represented Southend West, Essex, since 1997.

His colleagues responded with horror to the news, describing him as one of "the kindest men in politics".

A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of Sir David’s murder and remains in police custody.
