The Cambridges have shared an adorable photo of Prince Louis to mark his third birthday.

In the snap, the happy prince can be seen beaming from ear-to-ear as he sits on a red Frog Tadpole balance bike.

Taken by the Duchess of Cambridge, the photo captured the prince just before he left for his first day at Willcocks Nursery School in Kensington on Wednesday.

Wearing a stripped blue shit, a navy jumper and a pair of blue shorts, the royal couldn't look happier about his first day at nursery.

He also wore a pair of $75 Adidas Kids Duramo trainers and carried a backpack on his back.

The trendy Frog Tadpole balance bike has no pedals or chain and allows kids to learn how to balance before they step up to a pedal cycle.

Prince Louis will follow in the footsteps of his sister, Princess Charlotte, who also attended Willcocks Nursery School.

At $18,00 a year, the nursery is one of the most prestigious early learning schools in London.

There is both a morning and afternoon session, however, it's not yet known which one Prince Louis is attending.

A message on the school's website states: "Willcocks Nursery is a traditional nursery school which strives to maintain its ethos for high standards, excellence and good manners."
