Camilla to receive Meghan's royal role after first missing out

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, may receive a new prestigious royal patronage from the Queen after first missing out on the role to Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex.

When they decided to leave royal life behind, Prince Harry and Meghan left behind numerous patronages and Camilla may finally receive one patronage that she was reportedly 'pretty miffed' to lose in the first place as it's close to the Duchess' heart.

Camilla is believed to be quite the enthusiast of the dramatic arts, and could soon be the next royal patron of the National Theatre.

In 2019, the Queen gave the patronage to Meghan, which seemed fitting given her career as an actress before joining the royal family.

A source close to Camilla shared with The Sunday Times that she was "disappointed" to not receive the prestigious patronage at the time.

"She really wanted it," the insider shared. "She was pretty miffed when it went to Meghan, and will be all the more delighted to take it on now, after being disappointed not to get it first time round."

According to The Mirror, it's not the first time Meghan and Camilla have clashed, with the Duchess of Cornwall reportedly left "very upset" when Meghan insisted photos of her at the theatre were published the same day Camilla gave an important speech in 2020.

Camilla had been planning a speech on the 10th anniversary of the Women of the World Festival for almost a year and Meghan broke a promise not to overshadow the viral campaign by having photos of her visiting the National Theatre polished the same day.

One well-placed palace insider told the publication at the time: "Camilla’s work is very important to her and her decision to highlight the scourge of domestic violence at the 10th anniversary of Women of the World was a carefully thought-out plan.

"Over the last four years, she has worked tirelessly, mostly behind the scenes but to great effect, to use her platform and personal experiences to highlight the issue and help sufferers.

"Of course, it was known Harry and Meghan would be doing engagements this week, some privately, but everyone was in agreement that Camilla’s speech should take precedence. Unfortunately some people had other ideas."

In February 2021, after a review period following Harry and Meghan's royal exit in March 2020, the pair were forced to return their royal patronages to the Queen.

Harry lost several honorary military titles as well as his patronages of the Rugby Football Union and the Rugby Football League and the London Marathon Charitable Trust.

Meghan also lost her roles with the Association of Commonwealth Universities and The Queen's Commonwealth Trust, as well as her National Theatre patronage.

The National Theatre paid tribute to Meghan last year, thanking her for her support in making theatre "accessible to all" during her time as patron.

A statement read: "The National Theatre is very grateful for the support offered by The Duchess of Sussex throughout the course of her patronage.

"The Duchess championed our work with communities and young people across the UK, and our mission to make theatre accessible to all.

"As Buckingham Palace have stated, the process of appointing a new patron is ongoing and will be announced in due course."

Meghan and Harry were able to keep some of their private patronages following their exit.
