Survey Shows Women Prefer a House to Starting a Family

A survey of 2000 young women conducted by UK Grazia magazine has shown that one in three women don’t want to have a family, and almost half would prefer to buy a house.

The magazine survey was timed to the release of Sarah Jessica Parker’s new flick, I Don’t Know How She Does It, which portrays the life of a busy working mum.
According to the survey, 44 per cent of young women feel sorry for working mums, and one in five say it looks so hard, they’re thinking twice about having children.

Thirty percent of those surveyed cite body issues as a deterrent to getting pregnant, while a different 30 per cent – who have had children – say they are self-conscious of their post-baby body due to celebrity mums who seem to bounce back to their previous shape directly after giving birth.

Almost half of those surveyed think having a child would “make them poorer” – while more than half say they can’t afford to have a child.

UK Grazia editor-in-chief Jane Bruton said: “We were really surprised a third of childless women admitted they didn't want to start a family.
“It's clear from our survey 'having a baby' has just dropped off the to-do list for a whole generation of twenty-somethings.

“Yet with women bearing the brunt of the recession and headlines about rising costs of childcare forcing working mothers out of their jobs, is it any wonder these women are questioning whether motherhood is really worth it?

“It's time we started looking at the support systems out there for women so the new generation don't feel pushed into making a choice between motherhood and a career.”
