Post-Stefanovic Today show sees 'lowest ratings in a decade'
The freshly polished, new-look Today show kicked off on Monday with Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight taking centre stage alongside newsreader Tom Steinfort, sports reporter Tony Jones and entertainment reporter Brooke Boney.
However, it appears the overhaul of the Nine breakfast program hasn’t paid off as the show has experienced its “lowest ratings in 10 years”, according to The Daily Telegraph.
While Sunrise lured in a metro audience of 266,000, Today pulled in just 197,000 viewers from the five state capital cities across Australia – 69,000 less than their Seven rivals.
At the end of last year, long-time presenter Karl Stefanovic – along with brother Peter Stefanovic and his wife Sylvia Jeffreys – was culled from Today in order for the show to take a “new focus” in 2019.
Richard Wilkins, veteran entertainment reporter for the show, has also taken a step back from his role on Today as a part of the shakeup – instead he is set to join Sonia Kruger on Today Extra on Thursdays and Fridays.
During the premiere with the post-Stefanovic Today panel on Monday, many viewers weren’t impressed with the new line-up.
“I’m not watching now Karl’s gone,” one fan wrote on Instagram. “He brightened up my mornings”.
“Tried to watch, cant do it. I’ll watch 7 instead now. Good luck guys (sic),” another said.
However it wasn’t all criticism, with many viewers stoked with Georgie and Deborah fronting the show.
“Ignore the haters. Love waking up each morning to you Georgie,” said one fan.
“Good going. Love the line up so far this year.”
