After much anticipation, the new-look Today show kicked off in style on Monday morning, with Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight leading the team live from Melbourne’s Australian Open.
But not all viewers were impressed with the 2019 format of the show, which also features Tom Steinfort as newsreader, Tony Jones as sports reporter and Brooke Boney as entertainment reporter.
“Not the same without the Stefanovic team!!” wrote one fan on Instagram, while another penned, “I’m not watching now Karl’s gone. He brightened up my mornings”.
Some viewers claimed they would be switching to other networks’ breakfast shows, such as Channel Seven’s Sunrise or ABC’s News Breakfast.
“Tried to watch, cant do it. I’ll watch 7 instead now. Good luck guys (sic),” said a viewer.
“Oh my god, soooooo boring now. Nothing against the individual hosts, but it’s painful watching them all on this new lineup. There is no humour and there is absolutely no chemistry. Changing to seven or ABC,” wrote another.
However it wasn’t all criticism, with many viewers stoked with Georgie and Deborah fronting the show.
“Ignore the haters. Love waking up each morning to you Georgie,” said one fan.
“Good going. Love the line up so far this year.”
The new team excitedly kicked off their debut show on Monday morning from Melbourne, with Georgie describing it as “the very first day of a new era on Nine, with a new-look Today show team”.
“I’m thrilled to say good morning and welcome to my on-screen partner Deb Knight,” she added.
“Partner-in-crime Georgie Gardner,” responded Karl Stefanovic’s replacement.
Feeling like it’s the “first day of school”, Deb added: “Thankfully I’m not the only one on the desk who feels like the first day of school. I have new members of the team — and welcome to Tom Steinfort and Brooke Boney and Tony Jones”.
