Camila Cabello has weighed in on the wild rumors about the cost of her Met Gala ice purse.
In case you need reminding, Camila stunned at the Met Gala last month in a custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin gown that took 450 hours to make and was made with over 250,000 Swarovski crystals. However, all eyes were on her icy accessory.
While posing on the red carpet, Camila casually held a block of ice with a single copper rose frozen into the center.
The theme of this year’s Met Gala was “The Garden of Time,” and Camila explained that the ice block was a play on the “impermanence” of nature. “I feel like it is impermanence and things decaying over time and the beauty in that,” she told Extra on the red carpet.
The ice block — which was already melting by the time Camila made it to the red carpet — became one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the night, and before long, rumors started swirling that it cost a ridiculous amount of money to make.
In one TikTok, which has amassed nearly 3 million views, a creator claimed that the block of ice was crafted with “some expensive water from Germany” and was worth $22,500. (It’s worth noting that it’s unclear exactly where this figure came from.)
The rumors quickly caught on, and some people were even calling for Camila’s cancelation. Another TikTok with over 9.2 million views displayed tons of criticism toward the singer, including comments describing the ice block as an “excessive flaunting of wealth” and “a slap in the face to people that don’t have access to clean water.”
And now that the dust has settled, we’re finally getting clarity on what the ice block was truly worth — and how you can get your hands on your own.
During an appearance on last night’s episode of The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon asked Camila to debunk the claims about the cost of her Met Gala ice clutch, to which she gladly accepted.
“I was seeing this TikTok that had a bunch of comments and likes. It was like, ‘Camila Cabello is getting canceled because she spent $25,000 on this ice purse!’ I was like, Guys, it’s water, frozen,” she said, putting it bluntly.
Explaining how the purse was actually made, Camila said it could quite easily be created at home for “however much water costs, plus a rose that we got from Etsy.”
