The actress, who rose to fame for her role in the 1990s series Baywatch, and whose personal life became tabloid fodder after she married Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, spoke candidly about her career renaissance on a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live.
Anderson spoke at length about how she’s “being seen and recognized for my work” as opposed to “these tawdry moments,” referencing the scandal surrounding a stolen sex tape, which was taken by a disgruntled electrician who was fired from a job at Anderson and Lee's house in 1995.
The sex tape was reported missing by the couple in 1996, and though a series of lawsuits followed, the tape was ultimately released publicly on the internet. The 2022 Hulu series Pam & Tommy told the story, but Anderson says she wasn’t part of the process.
“I didn't have any involvement. No one called me, which was so strange, and that was hurtful.” She continued, sharing that while telling a public figure’s story isn’t against the law, she feels that “ethically it’s illegal. You're kind of fair game. I remember people telling me that a long time ago, that you are basically public property and you have no right to privacy,” she noted.
Anderson said “I don't dwell on it, but it was kind of a strange thing to pick a very terrible time in my life and make entertainment. People were nominated for Emmys and all sorts of stuff.” Lily James and Sebastian Stan were both nominated for their portrayals of Anderson and Lee, respectively, in the limited series.
“It's not the actors' fault,” said Anderson, saying she’s “sure” that James is “a great actress and stuff, and I don't care. I mean, it's just one of those things. It happened and now I'm here, and so this is the best payback,” Anderson mused.
