Niecy Nash Reacts to Grotesquerie’s Jaw-Dropping Twist, Says It Took 3 Days to Shoot Her Fight With [Spoiler]

“Mind-blowing” doesn’t even begin to describe Episode 7 of FX’s Grotesquerie, even if it is an accurate assessment of what happened to Sister Megan at the end of the game-changing hour.

In a nutshell, it was revealed that Lois — not her husband — has been in a coma this whole time, meaning that everything we saw in the first six episodes was merely her dream. The characters were all real people from Lois’ life, only they were presented in different ways, à la The Wizard of Oz. (Megan is a detective, Charlie is a doctor, Ed is her son-in-law, etc.) The episode ended with Lois waking from her coma, having just blown off Megan’s head during a jaw-dropping fight in her dream.

Below, series star Niecy Nash fields some of TVLine’s burning questions about Episode 7, taking us behind the scenes of that insane brawl and offering a tease of what’s still to come for Lois:

TVLINE | Let’s talk about that twist, which I assume you knew about from the very beginning. Was that one of the reasons you were drawn to this project?
First of all, I’m obsessed with Ryan Murphy. He will always have me at hello. I love to be a part of anything he’s doing, because his creativity is out of this world. So I knew we were in for an interesting ride, and I did know about the plot twist — but there’s still more to come.

TVLINE | That fight between you and Micaela Diamond was wild. How much of that did you do, and how much was stunt doubles?
Let me tell you something, we work with some amazing women who are our stunt doubles, and they were so excited about that fight scene. We filmed it over three days, and they made us look good. Shoutout to Jeanette Branch, my stunt double. They did the heavy lifting.

TVLINE | The visuals of the show can be hard to watch, but for me, Lois’ criticism of Merritt’s weight, and the description she used, was much harder to watch. As an actress, is it difficult to be so cruel?
I’ve had to be cruel a couple of times in scenes, and I always say to the actor, “Charge it to my art and not my heart.” I want to make sure they understand these are not my words. The sentiment is not mine.

TVLINE | As much as you’re able to say, what are Lois’ next steps?
That’s what she wants to know. What is this world? What do these dreams mean? And how do they impact the people around me who I was dreaming about? That’s what we’ve got to find out.

TVLINE | Those first six or seven episodes were very much a murder mystery. How would you describe the three we have left?
I feel like the beginning was a horror, the middle was a family drama, and now we’re in a full-blown whodunit. And if you watch the next couple of episodes, you’ll understand what I mean by that.

TVLINE | Might Lois and Travis Kelce’s character have some unfinished business?
Would they? Should they? Lois is trying to her act together and fly right. You’ll have to see if she stays on the path.

TVLINE | I’m kind of hoping she doesn’t stay on the path, at least for the sake of entertainment.
[Laughs] Shame on you.

TVLINE | I’m getting ahead of myself here, but have you and Ryan Murphy talked about what future seasons of Grotesquerie might look like?
We have not, so I don’t know. It’s all percolating in Ryan’s mind, so we’re in that space where we have to wait until the oracle comes forth and tells us the plan.

TVLINE | I loved (and kind of agreed with) Lois’ speech about how the world hasn’t been good since 2014. Is there a thesis or a message you feel this show is trying to get across?
I think it speaks to a lot of the things that we deal with currently in the world — global warming, murder, crime, women having agency over their own bodies — so I think it’s a commentary on a lot of those things, introducing another level of conversation.

How do you feel about Grotesquerie‘s major shift? Drop a comment with your thoughts — as well as your hopes for the remaining three episodes — below.
