Newest $7 Woolworths treat leaves taste testers divided: 'Very intrigued'
Would you try the Woolies hot cross bun flavoured mudcake?
We're about a month away from Easter and hot cross buns in all their different forms are appearing in every supermarket or bakery near you. We've had Cinnabon versions, along with Biscoff, Wagon Wheel and Caramilk to name just a few, but now we've got a traditional hot cross bun, that isn't a hot cross bun.
Lost? I don't blame you! Woolworths has surprised everyone this year by bringing out hot cross bun flavoured mudcake, which could be perfect for your Easter celebrations, or when that 3pm slump hits.
While the cake isn't set to arrive in stores until Wednesday, March 19, two professional taste testers have had the opportunity to try it early and their reactions were surprisingly different. Nectro Vlangos, AKA Nectorious Papi, and Nick Vavitis tell Yahoo Lifestyle whether or not they would buy it again.
Taste testers divided over Woolworths' hot cross bun mudcake
Nectro tells Yahoo Lifestyle he was surprised by the cake, saying, "I expected to loathe it but it wasn’t that bad. It’s not something I’d usually go for, I was very intrigued though. My first impression was sultana overload, but I guess in keeping with the theme of a traditional hot cross bun, it worked."
He adds, "The ganache and actual mudcake was quite nice. It did however have a bit too many sultanas. Maybe they could’ve substituted for choc chips?"
"Overall I like that they brought out an Easter treat to cater to the more traditional theme for those asking for it."
Nick, on the other hand, thought the cake "sucked", he shared with us, "I absolutely HATE sultanas and think they ruin everything, the cake itself was nice but there was two billion sultanas in and on top."
He joked, "I wish they had gone with a fruitless HCB, because fruit in hot cross buns is so 17th century."
While he really disliked the sultanas in the cake, Nick added that if there was a fruitless option he'd be keen to try it "because the spices of the cake were really nice".
In a video they shared to Instagram of their first taste test, Nick very passionately told the camera, "I'll fight you, sultanas suck in hot cross buns. I have picked every sultana out of my piece."
Nectro told the pair's followers, "It's a lightly spiced mudcake with sultanas and spiced ganache," he added, "I love the ganache."
"I feel like you're getting a hot cross bun in a mudcake," Nick said, not appearing too impressed. "I'm not mad. I'm not upset. It's just it is what it is."
He added that he enjoyed the spices coming through, but wished it was more "cinnamony".
"If you love traditional hot cross buns, then I feel like you'll love these," Nectro said.
Things got a little fiery when Nectro said, "I'm not mad at it, though, even the sultanas work."
"No, they don't!" Nick hit back. "Don't listen to them, they suck!"

Nectro and Nick's conversation sparked huge debate in the comments, with one user writing, "Go the sultanas!"
"I hate dried fruit," another added.
"Wish it wasn't fruit," a third said.
"I am with YOU Nick," someone else added.
"I don’t like sultanas either, and they look a bit overdone in the cake," one person wrote. "But yeah, will still try."

"[Nick] is so valid for this, they should have given us fruit and fruit free," another added.
"Traditional Hot Cross Buns all the way 🙌," someone else wrote.
"Wish they would leave hot cross buns alone!" one passionate hot cross bun fan said. "They are fruit buns for Easter. End of story. Make your fancy buns but call them what they are."
Another person agreed with Nectro, suggesting, "They should've made it a choc chip hot cross bun mudcake."
We have to agree, that would have been elite!
