Over the years hot cross buns have transcended from being more than just a beloved Easter treat — firstly, these days, they're available on shelves all year round. Secondly, forget the traditional fruit hot cross buns or the indulgent choc-chip ones.

Each year, it appears supermarkets and bakeries are coming out with more elaborate and nostalgic concoctions, from apple and cinnamon-flavoured buns to Biscoff or Caramilk-flavoured hot cross buns. Now Coles and Arnott's have teamed up to bring a new flavour to our attention: the limited-edition Wagon Wheels-inspired Hot Cross Bun.

“After the incredible buzz from last year’s launch of our limited edition hot cross buns inspired by Arnott’s classics, we’re excited to announce another Aussie favourite, Wagon Wheels is making its debut in bun form," Thea Comino, Coles Bakery Product Developer, told Yahoo Lifestyle. "We knew from the start that featuring this nostalgic and delicious treat was going to be a crowd pleaser."

The video, which has been viewed 115k times, attracted floods of comments from excited Coles shoppers who said they were keen to try the new hot cross buns.

"Omg! I love Wagon Wheels!" a third person wrote.

Wondering what exactly a Wagon Wheel hot cross bun entails? The collab promises a "delightful mash-up of Wagon Wheels biscuit" teamed with the traditional hot cross bun with gooey marshmallow, raspberry fudge, raspberry jellies and choc chips.

According to Thea, the nostalgic ideas take months of planning and trialling to perfect.

"When planning for the upcoming season, we dive deep into local and international market trends, gather feedback from our customers (we even scour TikTok and Instagram comments for hidden gems), and taste-test an endless array of buns," Thea said.
