Need more 'Yellowstone' in your life? Try these Western TV shows and family dramas
John Dutton (Kevin Costner) may be gone, but the hunger for "Yellowstone" drama lives on.
As the second half of Season 5 of Paramount Network's Western family drama gets more intense with every episode, fans of the popular series may want more than just weekly episodes (Sundays, 8 EST/PST) to satisfy their cravings for Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) level insults and rowdy cowboys.
While "Yellowstone" is the most-watched series on TV right now, it's not the only show to go to for family drama, Western tropes and beautiful shots of the Montana sky. We recommend a few more series if you need something to satisfy you as you wait to see what Beth, Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Jamie (Wes Bentley) will do next.
If you want a near perfect copy ... watch 'Territory' (Netflix)
Horses? Check. Cowboy hats? Check. A big piece of land integral to the soul and identity of a large, dysfunctional family? Big old check. Australian drama "Territory" recently arrived on Netflix, and it is very much the Down Under version of "Yellowstone," trading our Western plains for the dust-covered outback. Starring the magnetic and talented Anna Torv ("Mindhunter" and "Fringe"), the series about a massive Aussie cattle ranch with no heir apparent is a soapy, chewy melodrama that will keep you binge-watching, even if you might occasionally need subtitles to parse the accents.
If you like the writing ... watch 'Yellowstone' spinoffs and Taylor Sheridan's other series (Paramount+)
What better way to get your "Yellowstone" fix than to search out the other series penned by the man who invented the entire Dutton family? Taylor Sheridan is a prolific TV creator, to say the least, with half a dozen series on Paramount+ to choose from if you like his style and tone on "Yellowstone." But Sheridan is best when he keeps closest to his "Yellowstone" roots. So enjoy spinoffs "1883" and "1923" (period Westerns about Dutton ancestors), but steer clear of hacky "Tulsa King" and offensive "Landman." Dark prison-town drama "Mayor of Kingstown" and special-ops thriller "Lioness" are middling, but period Western "Lawman: Bass Reeves," starring David Oyelowo, is surprisingly good.
If you like the Dutton family drama ... watch 'Succession' (Max)
If your favorite part of "Yellowstone" is the interfamilial squabbling between rich people over the spoils of their empires, you might enjoy hopping over to New York City to visit the Roy clan. HBO's Emmy-winning 2018-23 drama "Succession" follows media mogul Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his wayward, snippy children (Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong) as they vie to run the family business. Loosely inspired by Rupert Murdoch and his conglomerate, "Succession" has the infighting and name-calling of the worst (or maybe best) Dutton family breakfasts. It's just that here, everyone is wearing designer suits instead of denim and flannel. Other series that fit this family business archetype include Showtime's "Billions" (streaming on Paramount+) and TNT's "Animal Kingdom" (Amazon Prime).
If you love modern Westerns ... watch 'Longmire' (Netflix)
One of the best parts of "Yellowstone" is how it's helped reinvigorate the Hollywood Western. If you are jazzed about the wild wild West you see on the Dutton ranch, you may enjoy others that focus less on family and business drama but still celebrate the setting. "Longmire," which debuted on A&E in 2012 and eventually moved to Netflix, is a superbly crafted modern crime Western about a Wyoming sheriff (Robert Taylor) trying to keep the peace in his little parcel of land. Like "Yellowstone," the series deals with the politics of local Native American reservations and casinos and the rugged landscape and particularly Wyoming way of life. For other series like this, try FX's "Justified" (streaming on Hulu) or AMC's "Dark Winds" (streaming on Netflix).
