‘Monster’ Will Star Charlie Hunnam As Serial Killer Ed Gein In Season 3 Of Netflix Series, Ryan Murphy Says

Ryan Murphy surprised the audience at the premiere of Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Monday with news about the next installment of his anthology series for the streamer. As he introduced onstage the cast of Monsters, including Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny, he announced that there will be a third season starring Sons of Anarchy alum Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein.

Murphy didn’t provide additional details about the project, including writers. His announcement was unexpected, I hear, and it is unclear whether all deals for the new installment are done yet.

Season 3 harkens back to the original Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story as it centers on another twisted serial killer. Edward Gein, known as Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s and also allegedly made trophies out of bodies and skin of corpses he exhumed from graveyards. Gein’s story inspired the Leatherface character in Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

It follows Tuesday’s premiere of Murphy’s American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez on FX and will be followed by the September 25 debut of Murphy’s Grostequerie, also on FX, and the September 26 premiere of his new ABC series Doctor Odyssey.
