Mom Unveils Nutritious Way To Keep Dogs Entertained Using Fall Apples
There is so much to love about the fall! It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy the outdoors and soak in the sunshine and vibrant colors. Even dogs appreciate this lovely season, seeming to understand that the ideal weather won’t be here long.
While they enjoy playing in the crisp air and crunchy leaves, they are equally fond of snacking on tasty apples. This nutritious treat can also be a fun enrichment game and a terrific way to entertain them.
Check out this video from September 13 to see how one mom turned this fall fruit into a homemade Kong.
What a terrific idea! This makes heading out to pick apples sound even more fun, especially if our dogs can join us for the day. Jessica’s (@dogs.made.simple) recipe for making a homemade Kong from this fall fruit is simple and easy. First, she removes the core and seeds while keeping the base intact. Next, she adds crunchy, low-calorie treats and then adds water. She places the apple in the freezer to set it for two hours. When it’s ready, she shows us that this enrichment toy can roll around so our pups can have even more fun. It’s a great way to entertain dogs, using natural and nutritious ingredients instead of synthetic materials.

Are Apples Good for Dogs?
Apples are a safe and nutritious treat for dogs when given in moderation. They’re low fat and packed with beneficial fiber for healthy digestion and vitamins A and C to support immune systems. Their natural crunchiness can also help clean dog’s teeth and freshen their breath. However, removing the seeds and core is essential. The seeds contain small amounts of cyanide, which can be toxic to dogs, and apple cores can cause intestinal blockages. While removing the peel is unnecessary, it can make it easier for pups with sensitive digestion. As with any toy, dogs should be supervised to ensure they don’t bite off a piece that could be a choking hazard.
Pet parents were excited to try this homemade treat. Viewer @maryfaycarroll responded, “Great idea! My dogs love a game of apple ball!” That’s easy to understand as it combines both food and play. Viewer @pattygridley pointed out, “Check the peanut butter ingredients before using. Many now have xylitol and other things that are toxic to dogs.” That’s, unfortunately, true, and even sugar is not ideal, so finding peanut butter that only uses peanuts is best for our canine kids.
If your dogs spend the day helping you pick your apples, they deserve a little treat at the end. After all, they enjoy fall flavors just as much as humans do.
