Miley Cyrus Says It Was Mom Tish's Idea for Her to Dance with a Pole During Teen Choice Awards Performance at 16
The Grammy winner sang "Party in the U.S.A." during the 2009 performance
Miley Cyrus says a key figure in her life inspired one of her more controversial onstage moments.
While in conversation with her sister Brandi Cyrus for Spotify’s Billions Club series, the singer, 32, recalled how her performance of "Party in the U.S.A." at the Teen Choice Awards in 2009 — when she infamously danced on stage with a pole attached to an ice cream cart — came to be.
“This is going to be no surprise to you. Do you know whose idea that was?” Miley asked Brandi, 37, who then guessed that their mom, Tish Cyrus, was responsible.
As Miley confirmed this was the case, stating, “Yup, that was my mom’s idea. So she always lets me take the blame," she continued, “When I got in trouble the next day, you know who was nowhere to be found? Tish Cyrus.”

Still, the Grammy Award winner said the performance was a memorable one, given that it stands out to her for a different reason than it does for others.
“The thing that I remember most about that performance was it was the first time I ever wore real diamond jewelry on stage," Miley explained.
Then, turning to the camera before her and Brandi, the Hannah Montana alum quipped, “So you guys remember a little old ice cream truck, I remember the diamonds.”

Last year, Cyrus opened up about her performance in a TikTok, where she said the use of the pole was all for "stability" purposes.
"I had cut 'Party in the U.S.A.' and I was doing my first performance for the Teen Choice Awards. My mom was like, 'I think it'd be really cool if she was in the trailer park, that's where we really do come from,' " Cyrus reflected in the clip, released on the social media platform for her “Used to Be Young” video series.
"So, apparently me dancing on an ice cream cart with a stripper pole, but it wasn't a stripper pole, it was actually just for stability. I had a heel on! Like what did you want from me?" the pop star added. "Was I really gonna do my performance without dancing on top of an ice cream cart?"
