The Met Gala: The most memorable moments of all time
The Met Gala may be one of the most prestigious fashion events in the world but that doesn't mean it's without its drama.
It may seem glamorous from the outside but those who get the elusive invite to attend reveal all is not as it seems.
"It's so hot and it's so crowded and everyone's pushing you," Gwyneth Paltrow once told Aussie radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O, not that it stopped her from attending!
And with Anna Wintour at the helm (we've watched The Devil Wears Prada!) we're sure that everyone is on edge in fear of breaking the fashion queen's written rules – no smoking, no selfies, no moving chairs, no under 18s, no publicists and this year masks and proof of vaccines are essential – and who knows how many unwritten rules for the event.

'Has-been loser': Lindsay Lohan criticised for Met Gala comments
She has even admitted to banning people, telling James Corden she would never invite Donald Trump to the gala again.
So what really goes on at the ball and what are the controversies that really have people talking?
Princess Diana'a appearance at the Gala
It wasn't so much her appearance at the 1996 Met Gala that was shocking, it was that it was the first and only Met Gala that she attended.
Back then, the Met Gala was traditionally held in December in New York and the 35-year-old divorced princess thrilled the fashion crowd with her appearance in a John Galliano for the house of Dior silk slip dress.
Tragically she died the following September following the infamous car accident in a Paris tunnel.
Hayden Panettiere takes a tumble
Heroes and Nashville actress Hayden Panettiere lost her footing on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as she tripped over the skirt of her stunning Dennis Basso gown at the 2014 gala. Luckily she laughed off the mishap and continued to enjoy the event.
Given Jennifer Lawerence had done the same the previous year at the Oscars when accepting her Best Actress award, Hayden is in good company.
Kylie Jenner's pain for fashion
There is no doubt that Kylie Jenner looked every inch the modern fairytale princess in her custom made crystal-encrusted Balmain gown at the 2016 ball. Designer Olivier Rousteing had ensured that the teen stood out from the crowd at her first-ever Met Gala but the adage no pain, no gain was evident as she revealed that the dress had left cuts on her legs.
"When ur dress made you bleed and ur feet are purple [sic]," Kylie wrote on her social media. When her fans expressed concern at her fashion injuries, she quickly followed up by saying: "It was worth it though."
We concur – that dress is definitely worth a little pain.
Jaden Smith bringing his hair as his date
Will Smith's son Jaden Smith is a bit a fashionista and loves to make a statement. At the 2017 Met Gala he turned up with his newly shorn dreadlocks as an accessory.
"Since I couldn't bring my sister as a date, I brought my old hair," the then teen explained in a red carpet interview.
The previous year, Jaden and sister Willow had attended the Met Gala together and despite not knowing how his sister felt about being replaced by Jaden's hair, she was back on the red carpet with him in 2019.
Lena Dunham being intimidated by the fashion set
Even though Lena Dunham has been attending the Met Gala since at least 2012, she showed her insecurities at hanging out with the fashion set after the 2016 event.
The Girls creator and actress had been seated beside New York Giants footballer Odell Beckham Jr and felt he'd ignored her because: "I was not the shape of a woman by his standards".
She later took to social media to apologise and explain herself. "Despite my moments of bravado, I struggle at industry events (and in life) with the sense that I don't rep a certain standard of beauty and so when I show up to the Met Ball surrounded by models and swan-like actresses it's hard not to feel like a sack of flaming garbage," she wrote on Instagram.
"I owe Odell Beckham Jr an apology," she added. "I went ahead and projected these insecurities and made totally narcissistic assumptions about what he was thinking, then presented those assumptions as facts. I feel terrible about it. Because after listening to lots of valid criticism, I see how unfair it is to ascribe misogynistic thoughts to someone I don't know AT ALL." At least she owned her mistake.
She's obviously overcome her fears as she continues to attend the ball.
Tina Fey slamming the Met Gala as a Jerk Fest
Multi-award winning actress and writer Tina Fey may have had an invite to the Met Gala back in 2010 but after she slammed the event during an interview with David Letterman in 2015, she's unlikely to be invited back anytime soon.
The creator of the cult classic movie Mean Girls called out the biggest mean girls of them all, those who attend the Met Gala.
"I have gone to it once, and it is such a jerk parade," Tina said. "It is so unbelievable. Clearly, I'll never go again. Every jerk from every walk of life is there, wearing some stupid thing… It's all the people you would punch in the whole world."
Demi Lovato ditches ball for an AA meeting
And Tina Fey is far from the only celebrity who hasn't enjoyed the Met Gala. Singer/songwriter Demi Lovato also only attended once and hated it.
"I had a terrible experience," Demi told Billboard Magazine. "This one celebrity was a complete bitch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink."
Luckily instead of turning to alcohol, they headed straight for an AA meeting. "I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with than the people at the Met Gala — fake and sucking the fashion industry’s dick." They don't mince their words!
Solange Knowles and Jay-Z's lift drama
You don't expect family dramas to play out at such a prestigious event but Beyonce's sister Solange obvious had a beef with Bey's hubby Jay-Z and could wait to get home to have it out with him.
A video was leaked of Solange's physically assaulting Jay-Z in a lift at the 2014 Met Gala after-party.
According to TMZ, who managed to get hold of the security video, Solange was 'wildly kicking and swinging at him inside an elevator'.
The family released a statement after the video became public saying: "our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred."
Jay-Z later addressed the altercation in his hit Kill Jay-Z rapping: "You egged Solange on / Knowin' all along /All you had to say you was wrong." Good to know that even the most famous of families don't always get along!
The Met Gala In America: A Lexicon of Fashion will take place on Monday September 13th in New York.
