Met Gala 2022: What stars wore to their first Met Gala vs this year

The Met Gala is over for another year but that doesn't mean we've stopped talking about it quite yet. Those who love fashion are still poring over the choice of gowns and picking their favourites.

For many of the celebrities on the red carpet, it definitely wasn't their first rodeo.

Here's a look at some of our favourite regular attendees at their first Met Gala compared to this year's event, themed In America: An Anthology of Fashion.

Blake Lively

Actror Blake Lively made her Met Gala debut in 2008 wearing a strapless black Ralph Lauren gown with feather embellishments on the skirt.

This year, as a co-chair of the Gala, Blake's transforming Versace dress was a tribute to the city the event is held in: New York. The dress started as a copper gown before the bow was pulled, revealing soft teal that evokes the way copper patinas as it ages.

"This dress is a homage to New York City and so many of the classic, iconic buildings," Blake revealed as she pointed out some of the details on the red carpet.

Anna Wintour

Anna Wintour is the Queen of the Met Gala, you don't even get to go if she doesn't approve your invitation.

In 1989 she had been editor of Vogue for a year and she wore a heavily sequinned top and black skirt for The Age of Napoleon: Costume from Revolution to Empire, 1789-1815 themed Gala.

This year, still reigning supreme as the co-chair of the Gala, the editor-in-chief of Vogue wore a tiara, sequined dress and feathered cape. One thing that was missing were her signature sunglasses - they certainly would have clashed with the tiara.

Kim Kardashian

Kim's first Met Gala was as her then-boyfriend Kanye West's plus one in 2013 and she admitted that she was very nervous.

Kim was pregnant with daughter North at the time and wore long-sleeved floral gown by Ricardo Tisci for Givenchy. While some made mean jokes about her "sofa" dress, Kim wasn't bothered.

“I thought it was so cool,” Kim said. “It got a lot of criticism and I didn’t care because I really loved it.”

This year Kim came to the Met Gala with new partner Pete Davidson. And not only did she stun with her hair dyed platinum blonde but she was also wearing a $5 million iconic Marilyn Monroe gown.

"This is Marilyn Monroe's dress and it is 60 years old and she wore this when she sang 'Happy Birthday' to President John F. Kennedy in 1962," she told Vogue correspondent La La Anthony.

"I had to lose 16 pounds [7kg]," Kim admitted.

"It was such a challenge. It was like a role. I was determined to fit it. I haven't had carbs or sugar in about three weeks," she added.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker actually went to her first Met Gala in 1995 and wore a simple black dress that she'd picked up at a thrift store. The following year, she invited designer Alexander McQueen who designed their co-ordinated look.

This year, Sarah Jessica wore a custom black-and-white Christopher John Rogers ball gown with an extravagant Philip Treacy headpiece.

"This dress was really exquisite and pretty much fit the period of time that Andrew Bolton [head curator of the Museum of Modern Art's Costume Institute] picked for this exhibit," Sarah Jessica told La La Anthony.

Cardi B

Right from her first Met Gala, it seems that Cardi B's motto is "go big or go home". Girl knows how to dress for the occasion.

For the 2018 Met Gala theme Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, she wore a pearl-adorned Moschino dress and was accompanied by the designer Jeremy Scott.

This year she was carrying some serious weight in a heavily chained bespoke Versace gown.

Katy Perry

The I Kissed A Girl singer first attended The Met Gala in 2009 wearing a striking blue and gold Tommy Hilfiger dress.

As her career has grown, so too have her outfits at the Met Gala as Katy is known to go for a quirky interpretation of the theme (remember her chandelier dress - she was literally a chandelier).

This year she was almost demure in comparison. “It would be pretty obvious for me to go play the kooky, crazy, wild, big, fun, colourful card," she said about her choice of outfit last month. "This time, I’m going to play a whole different card.”

The one-shouldered lace-edged, black and cream Oscar de la Renta dress still had an edginess to it while suitable for the theme.

Emma Stone

La La Land actress Emma Stone's dress choices have matured as she has. At her first Met Gala, she wore a pretty, strapless mini dress.

This year she looked ethereal in a low-cut white Louis Vuitton satin dress, with white feathers at the bottom.

But this wasn't the first time she's worn that dress. It was actually one of the wedding gowns she wore when she tied the knot with Saturday Night Live director Dave McCary in 2020.

Gigi Hadid

For her first Met Gala in 2015, model Gigi Hadid wore a striking red Diana Von Furstenberg dress.

This year, mum-of-one Gigi interpreted the theme in a red Versace corseted latex catsuit with a giant matching puffer jacket.

Both the Met Gala and those who've become regulars have clearly upped their game over the years. One can only wonder what next year will bring.
