Melissa Joan Hart Feels 'Guilty' About Taking 'Underage' Britney Spears to Nightclubs: 'I Should Have Known Better'

"I love dancing and I loved going out, but I also knew to be responsible and, like, when to stop," reflected Hart

Melissa Joan Hart never wanted to be a bad influence on Britney Spears.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hart reflected on her time working with Spears on Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the "(You Drive Me) Crazy" music video in 1999 and revealed she took the then-underage pop icon to nightclubs.

"Britney and I got to do a lot of press together. And we had a lot of fun together during this time," said the Clarissa Explains It All actress, 48, of the "Toxic" singer. "I saw that she was just surrounded by people, never able to break free. And I was like, ‘Hey want to come?’"

At the time, Hart "would go to a club every night" and wanted to invite Spears, 42, to join. "I love dancing and I loved going out, but I also knew to be responsible and, like, when to stop," she explained.

"She was underage and young and — but I [was] just like, 'Let’s go out. We’re just gonna go out and have some fun,'" added Drive Me Crazy star. "And I feel really guilty about that still to this day because I should have known better, being a big sister."

Hart acts alongside La La Anthony in the new Lifetime movie The Bad Guardian, which centers on a woman whose father is placed in a conservatorship while she's out of town.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the Melissa & Joey star explained she was “captivated by the script” and that while Spears and Wendy Williams might be more “big-name victims of guardianship and conservatorship,” this film has more of a “small town perspective.”

“In the Britney version we see in real life, for her, it's her fighting to get out of her own conservatorship,” Hart explains. “This movie is very much about me, the daughter of a man who's been taken to the hospital and then from there put into a guardianship. So I'm a small-town woman that doesn't have the money to pay for the big fancy lawyers to fight the big system.”
