Meghan Markle penned her most emotional Instagram post to date as she said goodbye to a longtime friend on January 7. On Tuesday, the actress-turned-lifestyle maven publicly mourned the death of her dog Guy with a heartbreaking letter about all the life milestones he’d been by her side for, from her Suits era playing Rachel Zane to marrying Prince Harry and starting a family in Montecito, California, as well as all the “years of unconditional love” the rescue beagle brought her.

"I have cried too many tears to count–the type of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you not feel them, or pretend they’re not there,” she wrote in the tribute alongside a moving video montage.

She shared memories of little Guy taking a walk by Prince Harry and her son Prince Archie, hanging out in the backyard for a mom-daughter picnic with Meghan’s daughter Princess Lilibet, begging for treats as she cooked in the kitchen, wagging his tale as she cuddled up with him on the couch, and other sweet behind-the-scenes moments of their life over the years.

“But they are. And that’s okay too,” she said. “Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you’ll never know. As ever, Meghan."

The Duchess of Sussex also opened up about how Guy came into her life–and their instant connection. “In 2015, I adopted a beagle from a dog rescue in Canada. He had been at a kill shelter in Kentucky and given a few days to live. I swooped him up….and fell in love,” she wrote. “They referred to him as ‘the little guy’ because he was so small and frail, so I named him ‘Guy’. And he was the best guy any girl could have asked for.”

She revealed that Guy had been her constant companion, even making cameos on her Instagram and on The Tig, her now-defunct lifestyle brand. “He was with me at Suits, when I got engaged, (and then married), when I became a mom….he was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort,” she added. She also opened up about how Prince Harry supported her when Guy recovered from several surgeries before their move to the States, writing, “H and I would drive late at night, after hours, to see Guy as he recovered in Surrey for months on end.”

Guy most recently made a cameo in a teaser for Markle’s upcoming Netflix cooking series, and she revealed that he’d be heavily featured throughout the series. “Because many of you will now see Guy in this new series, I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss. I think you may fall a little bit in love too.”

Markle closed out her emotional post by urging potential dog owners to consider adopting dogs in shelters with the hashtag #AdoptDontShop.
