Meghan Markle Calls Out Mindy Kaling For Referring To Her By The Wrong Name

Quite frankly, Meghan Markle would hate our headline.

The Duchess of Sussex explained in the second episode of her new Netflix lifestyle series, “With Love, Meghan” that she goes by the name Meghan Sussex now, rather than the name she’s widely known by — Meghan Markle.

The duchess decided to make her preference known about 21 minutes into the episode when actor and producerMindy Kaling— who was a guest star in the episode — kept on referring to her as “Meghan Markle.”

“It’s so funny too, that you keep saying ‘Meghan Markle.’ You know I’m Sussex now,” the “Suits” alum said firmly.

Although it’s unclear how Kaling initially reacted to this confrontation due to the show’s editing, the Archewell Inc. co-founder went on to explain why being referred to as Meghan Sussex is “so meaningful” to her.

“You have kids and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children.’ And that feels so — I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me. But it just means so much to go, ’This is our family name, our little family name,” she said.

“Well, now I know,” Kaling said. “And I love it.”

Of course, it’s easy to understand why Kaling wasn’t aware that Meghan was now going by the last name Sussex — because the reason is somewhat confusing, especially to Americans.

In 2018, when Meghan married Prince Harry, his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, gave the couple new titles. Harry became His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, and Meghan became Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.

In 2020, when the couple announced their decision to step back as senior members of the royal family, Buckingham Palace said in a statement that Meghan and Harry could keep their titles as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but they would no longer be referred to as His and Her Royal Highness.

In February, the Times of London reported that the couple’s two children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, were now using the last name “Sussex.” The move is very similar to how Harry used the name “Harry Wales” while he served in the military, since his father, now King Charles, was the Prince of Wales at the time.

On Monday, Meghan echoed why changing the family’s last name to “Sussex” was important to her in an exclusive published by People.

“I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me,” Meghan said.

She went on to say that she considers the last name “Sussex” as “part of our love story.”

“I think as the kids get older, they’re so excited about, ‘Oh my gosh, Mama and Papa, how did you meet?’ I think that will come with time as they get older, but for right now a huge part of our love story is that we share the name Sussex.”
