MAFS' Lauren and Matt both got the short end of the stick

Tonight Married At First Sight’s Lauren and Matthew said goodbye to their relationship and the social experiment, becoming the first couple to leave the reality show this year.

There’d been plenty of discussion and confusion surrounding their sex life in the lead up to this big decision, but who is actually responsible for this devastating TV breakup.

Frankly, ex-virgin Matthew and Lauren both got the short end of the stick coming into this experience.

As a 29-year-old virgin, just dating a person let alone sexual activity was a rather foreign concept for Matt.

“It was never a conscious choice to still be a virgin at 29,” he said in an audition tape that was aired on Nine’s Talking Married.

“It was just an unfortunate side effect of walling myself off from any sort of vulnerability, being social and dating”.

Matt was then questioned about why he was applying for the show when he was so guarded, to which he replied, “because it terrifies me”.

“It’s only something I’ve recently learnt that the more something terrifies me the more important it is that I have to do it,” he explained.

“If I can face this, there’s nothing that can hurt me basically.”

But despite going through with it and having sex for the first time with Lauren, Matthew did get hurt.

Here’s a man who has admitted to being an “introvert” and not socialising as much due to being bullied in the past.

It’s understandable that hearing of Lauren’s adventurous sexual appetite could strike panic in his mind.

On the other hand, makeup artist Lauren is an empowered woman, and chose to openly communicate her sexual preferences as you do in a trusting marriage.

She is entitled to express her desires, and wasn’t necessarily expecting to be paired with someone whose virginity was yet to be taken.

It’s a shame for many fans of the show who saw Lauren and Matthew as a promising couple, but we’ll all be watching this space to see what happens with them next post the MAFS experience.
