‘MasterChef Generations’ Results: Who Went Home Tonight

Night 4 and 5 of MasterChef: Generations’ competition returned after a short hiatus and picked up right where the cooking competition left off with the generations— Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z—facing challenges against each other to win the title.

Wednesday night began with the “Birthday Bakes” episode, a return to the individual challenge, in which Gordon Ramsay challenged the remaining home cooks to bake the best two-layer birthday cake of their lives.

As the winning captain of the last challenge, Anna—a Millennial—got to select one generation to mix their cake by hand with a whisk as opposed to using their Cuisinart stand mixers. She chose Gen Z, because after having been teamed up with the Baby Boomers and finding them very helpful in winning the last challenge, she couldn’t do it to them. Plus, all five members of Team Gen Z were still in the competition.

The second hour—episode 5—was a Mystery Box challenge, which took each generation down memory lane to their childhood and iconic ingredients from that era. The challenge was to make a MasterChef worthy dish using those ingredients.

As the holder of the Immunity Pin, Gen Z’s Becca got to select which generation would be cooking with which box. She assigned the Millennial box to her generation, Gen Z; the Millennials were given the Baby Boomers box; the Gen Xs got to keep the Gen X Mystery Box; and that left the Gen Z box for the Baby Boomers.

The added instruction was that they had to use at least four of the ingredients and could supplement from a limited pantry to help turn the ingredients into a MasterChef worthy dish.

Judges Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Aarón Sánchez first selected the top cakes from each generation: Becca from Gen Z with a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting, Kamay representing Millennials with a lemon confetti cake, Kimberly from Gen X with a vanilla cake with strawberry jam filling, and Christopher from the Baby Boomers with a Black Forest cake.

The winner of the birthday cake challenge was Becca, which meant the entire Gen Z team was safe. It also meant that Becca won the Immunity Pin for the following episode.

“The fact that last challenge I was at rock bottom and I felt like a failure, to come into this challenge and to make something that the judges loved and to win this Immunity Pin, it feels amazing,” Becca said. “It’s my new best friend.”

From the Millennials, Anna was in the bottom three with her brown butter coffee cake. Representing Gen x was Arthur with his strawberries and cream cake. And Boomer Geags’ vanilla cake with blueberries made him the final person in the bottom 3.

Despite being the top contestant for the past two competitions, Anna came out on the losing end of the birthday cake competition, and she was joined by Geags when the judges sent two people home.

“It’s simply not fair to send one of you home tonight,” Gordon said. “Both of your cakes had egregious mistakes.”

“The Geags that came into the MasterChef kitchen was kind of naïve,” Geags said. “I grew from this. I got to experience it whether it’s good or bad. Then you take from it what you learn and move on.”

Anna said, “I’m proud of myself and what I was able to do in the MasterChef kitchen, but I wanted to take it to the next level. I do think I have a calling with food. This cake does not define me as a cook.”

The top dish from the Baby Boomers was Horacio’s veggie burger croquettes; from Gen Z, it was Hallie with a lemon salmon; from Gen X, Kimberly created Asian spiced turkey and hot dog meatballs; and lastly, from the Millennials, it was Michael with a bran flakes fried pork chop.

“I know right now, my mom is losing her mind,” said Michael, who finished best of the best. “On a day when I’m really missing her, on a day when I wish she could see my performance, it’s almost an affirmation that she is seeing it and she’s been with me this entire time.”

The worst dish from the Baby Boomers was Christopher’s pan-seared chicken thigh; from Gen Z, Murt made an overcooked Wagyu Filet; and the final bottom dish was Arthur’s New York strip steak, representing Gen X.

The worst of the worst turned out to be Christopher’s chicken thigh because it was grossly undercooked and the judges weren’t able to taste it.

MasterChef is no joke,” Christopher said. “It’s a tough journey. I’ve the spent the last year with all sorts of new beginnings and I’ve realized, I need to do stuff that I’ve always wanted to do, so being on MasterChef is not on my bucket list anymore. I am proud that I got to this point. It’s changed my life.”

MasterChef airs Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
